Plymouth Argyle attacker linked with Championship switch

Plymouth’s our of contract attacker Ruben Lameiras is attracting the interest of newly-promoted Championship side Charlton Athletic, according to Plymouth Live.

Hot on the heels of Graham Carey being linked with a move to Burton Albion, Lameiras could be set for a jump to the second tier from recently-relegated Argyle.

It might not be the biggest of blows for the Pilgrims, Lameiras hasn’t signed a new deal and is widely expected to leave, but the former Spurs man has been in terrific form this season and it will be tough to see him leave on a free transfer.

After leaving Spurs he moved to Atvidaberg in Sweden, before coming back to the UK with Coventry City. Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t prevent them being relegated to League Two, so moved on to Home Park only to suffer the same fate two years later.

Charlton, promoted via the play-offs a week ago, will likely be shopping in the free agent market despite their elevation, courtesy of rogue owner Roland Duchatelet.

Our View

This would be a big signing for Charlton. It’s never going to be feasible for him to stay at Plymouth, they couldn’t possibly afford him now they’ve gone down.

Even if they’d stayed up he looked likely to leave and although it will sting, it won’t be the end of the world for whoever takes over.
