Notts County battled their way through Storm Gareth to beat Carlisle 3-1 at Brunton Park and secure a vital three points in the quest to preserve their EFL status.
Kane Hemmings gave the Magpies the lead just before half-time when he seized on a defensive error from Gary Liddle before scoring a second from the penalty spot in the sixty-sixth minute after a foul on Richard Duffy in the area.
Hallam Hope pulled a goal back for the Cumbrians in bizarre circumstances after he waited by the post and when County’s young goalkeeper Ryan Schofiled dropped the ball to kick clear, he nipped in to steal possession and slot home.
This induced nervousness in the County ranks for the final fourteen minutes. However, they showed remarkable resilience in dreadful conditions to hang on until Lewis Alessandra ended their anxiety by adding a third in stoppage time to secure a crucial win for Notts and send the one hundred fifty-one hardy souls who made the trip from Nottingham home in a joyous mood.
The victory lifted County off the bottom of the League Two standings and puts them within four points of safety while defeat left Carlisle out of the play-off places in eighth.
Notts County fans were both surprised and delighted with a tremendous win which gave them renewed hope of surviving relegation which seemed to have all but vanished after a terrible result at Cheltenham on Saturday. Here is a small selection of their responses on Twitter.
