West Ham loan player draws high praise with Northampton goal

Northampton Town made it seven games unbeaten in League two last night as they beat Newport County 1-0 at Sixfields.

Keith Curle’s side moved to within six points of an unlikely play-off place, courtesy of Joe Powell’s late winner after coming on as a sub.

The youngster is on loan from West Ham and made it two goals in his last three outings for the Cobblers, helping them to the precious victory.

Powell, who played in the 8-0 destruction of Macclesfield in the EFL Cup for the Hammers, has started four times in League two this season, coming off the bench twice.

His heroics certainly caught the eye of one Hammers’ legend, with former player Jack Collison applauding the youngster.

Referencing Ronaldo’s Champions League heroics, he paid homage to 20-year-old Powell.

Collison played over 100 times for West Ham, later turning out for Ipswich and Peterborough before retiring due to a persistent knee injury at 27-years-old.

Our View

Collison knows a thing or two about talented youngsters, having represented Wales at under 21 international as well as earning full caps. In Powell he will see an able and attack-minded young man desperate to make his mark in the senior game.

He’s not the most high-profile loan player in League One, but he’s proving to be an effective one for Northampton as they look to gate-crash the promotion party.
