Luton Town received the news they’ve been hoping to receive for years last night. Their proposal to move to a new ground have been accepted by Luton Town Council.
It’s a historic moment for the club, currently top of League One. They’ve ascended the divisions, fought back from a 30 point deduction and financial ruin to sit on the cusp of finally becoming great again.
A generation of football fans will know Luton Town as a lower league side, but they were so close to joining the Premier League revolution in 1992. They suffered relegation after a decade in the top flight on the even on the Premier League starting. They missed out on the millions and fell from grace rapidly.
Few will remember Brian Stein and Ricky Hill inspiring a Wembley win. Andy Dibble’s penalty save, or even being finalists for a second year in a row the following season.
Those days are what the club wants back and on the field, they’ve shown the sort of promise that might bring success.
That had to be matched off the field, that had to be in a new ground, one where someone’s washing doesn’t hang on a line on the entrance to the away end. Now, after years of fighting, it might actually happen.
It’s fair to say this lot are bloody delighted!
