Cambridge United became the victims of an FA Cup giant killing act, losing 4-3 at Guiseley in the first round this afternoon.
4-3 hugely flatters the visitors, finding themselves 4-0 down to the National League North team inside an hour at Nethermoor.ย Despite a rousing comeback courtesy of two Jabo Ibhere goals and a George Maris rocket, the U’s slipped out of the cup with a whimper.
It was no less than the home side deserved either, showing wonderful cohesion and work rate to humble their illustrious opponents. Two divisions separate the side but this afternoon, there was only one team who looked Football League quality.
The result has prompted shamed Cambridge fans to take to social media with a message for their board and players. It varies from person to person, some calling the attitudes appalling, others questioning the manager’s role.
Whatever it is, the recent run of good form in the league has gone out of the window and Joe Dunne will have a huge job on his hands picking his side up after this one.
Please donโt let this paper over the cracks. Horrendous to be 4 goals down to a sixth tier side.
