Millwall Crisis Deepens with Brutal Double Setback

Millwall have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of crunch home fixtures against Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton.

After a 3-1 defeat on the south coast at Portsmouth, attention quickly shifts to two important Championship fixtures at The Den. Both opponents arrive with problems of their own, but the pressure remains firmly on Millwall as Alex Neil navigates a busy week and a growing list of unavailable players.

Sturge Substituted With Concussion as Mazou-Sacko Suffers Knee Issue

Zak Sturge was forced off during the first half at Fratton Park after being struck in the face by a cross from Portsmouth midfielder Terry Devlin. The defender, signed permanently from Chelsea in the summer following a successful loan spell, left the pitch on a stretcher with medical staff immediately calling for a concussion substitution. Neil later confirmed that the change was made under concussion protocols, meaning the left back will miss the upcoming matches.

His replacement, experienced full back Joe Bryan, will also be absent after receiving a red card later in the game. That leaves Millwall with no natural senior left sided defender available for Wednesday night’s clash with Sheffield Wednesday or Saturday’s meeting with Southampton. It adds to the frustration of a week that the manager hoped would bring stability following the international break.

The problems mounted shortly after half time when winger Derek Mazou-Sacko was withdrawn following what appeared to be a knee injury. The 21-year-old has become an increasingly important figure, starting five of Millwall’s last six league games. Neil revealed that the issue came from an awkward planting of the knee after a strong challenge in midfield, describing the incident as ā€œa bit of a naughty oneā€ that went unpunished.

With Mazou-Sacko’s influence growing in recent weeks, his potential absence would be another significant setback. Neil admitted that the early signs ā€œare not looking goodā€, although further assessment is required before the club can determine the severity of the injury.

Massive Week Looms as Neil Faces Selection Headaches

Both forthcoming opponents arrive at The Den with their own motivation for reaction. Sheffield Wednesday were heavily beaten 3-0 in their derby at Bramall Lane, while Southampton arrive after thrashing Charlton Athletic 5-1 and with another midweek game to navigate. Each club sits in the lower half, but both present different challenges for a Millwall side seeking consistency.

The injuries to Sturge and Mazou-Sacko come at a time when the squad had only just started to return to full strength after the international break. Their withdrawal leaves Neil with difficult decisions regarding both formation and personnel, particularly on the left side of the pitch, where cover is now extremely limited.

As the Championship schedule intensifies, the demands on squad depth continue to grow. The Lions manager spoke openly about frustration with the nature of the injuries, particularly given the proximity of the next two fixtures. With a home crowd behind them and back-to-back games at The Den, the expectation will be for a strong response despite the challenges.

One thing remains certain. The setbacks to Zak Sturge and Derek Mazou-Sacko could not have come at a worse moment, and with Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton both desperate for points, the pressure is on Millwall to adapt quickly.
