Difficult Decisions Ahead – Colchester United Boss Previews Walsall Clash

Colchester United manager Danny Cowley has admitted he faces some difficult decisions ahead of Saturday’s trip to top of the table Walsall.

The U’s are facing a selection headache as they look to get back on track in League Two.

Players Returning, But Must Be Respectful

Colchester will travel without 5-goal striker Micah Mbick, who is away on international duty with England Under-20s, but have Samson Tovide ready to step in after his goal in midweek.

Will Goodwin, a summer loan signing from Oxford United, also featured in the midweek Vertu Trophy victory over Fulham on his comeback from injury.

Cowley also faces selection problems at the other end of the pitch, with skipper Tom Flanagan staking a claim for a recall after injury.

The U’s boss said:
“They are always difficult decisions – you never make any decision lightly.”

“It’s always about trying to do as much due diligence and being as conscientious as you can, and hopefully making sure that you get those decisions right, respectful of the fact that it’s players’ careers.”

“You’ve always got to make sure that you do the necessary work, to make the right decision for the players and, of course, the team.”

“We have some challenges at the top end of the pitch with unavailability.”

Despite the injury issues the club has faced, Cowley is confident in the squad depth he has available.

“But we’re very lucky with the squad of players that we have and the depth that we have, particularly in that position.”

“There are other positions where we’re a little bit lighter, but that is one position where we do have depth and have a lot of competition for places.”

“I never see the disappointment in unavailability; I just see the opportunity.”

“We have a lot of boys that are putting their hand up and are really eager to play on Saturday.”

U’s Ready To Challenge Pace Setters Again

Colchester have had a frustrating and mixed season so far, winning 4 and drawing 6 of their 15 matches. Cowley’s side is currently 16th in League Two on 18 points, 7 behind Gillingham in the final playoff spot.

The U’s have had some positive results against teams in the playoff pack, including a 2-1 away win at Grimsby Town.

“We’ve been able to go to the teams at the top of the league and perform well and get the game on our terms.”

“That’s the ambition come the weekend.”
