Shrewsbury Town vs Newport County: Prediction, Lineups, Betting Tips & Odds (15/11)

Shrewsbury Town play host to fellow relegation rivals Newport County in a crucial clash towards the bottom of the League Two table on Saturday at the Crowd Meadow.

Our Three Predictions for Shrewsbury Town vs Newport County

  • First Prediction: Match to end in a draw – 12/5
  • Second Prediction: Over 1.5 goals to be scored -1/3
  • Third Prediction: Both teams to score – 9/10

First Prediction for Shrewsbury Town vs Newport County – Match to end in a draw – 12/5

Although this game will be a must-win game for both sides at this point, with neither side in form, it’s tricky to see how this game doesn’t turn into a really scrappy game between two poor sides in desperate need of all three points.

It’s no secret how hard it is to stabilise after League One relegation, with the Shrews struggling to find their feet in League Two, whilst Newport have been close to relegation in the past three seasons at least, the side finishing 15th, 18th and 22nd in the last few years.

Although the hosts have a decent record on home soil, Newport have the opposite, and have picked up 10 of their 11 points on the road this season, which is a very strange record to say the least. This means David Hughes’ side won’t prove to be an easy test, but neither will Michael Appleton’s side on home soil.

Neither side have been winning football games this season, both sides winning just three of their 15 league games, with both sides also losing back-to-back games in all competitions coming into this clash. It’s no surprise to see this matchup predicted to end level at full time.

Second Prediction for Shrewsbury Town vs Newport County – Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 1/3

One of the reasons these sides are in this position is because of their inability to defend and their less-than-ideal record when it comes to scoring at the other end. The Exiles have the joint-worst defensive record in the division, conceding 27 goals in 15 games, joint with 22nd-placed Cheltenham Town, whilst Appleton’s side have conceded 25 goals in 15 games.

On average, these equate to 1.80 and 1.67 goals shipped per game for both sides, which is an extremely poor record to have at this stage of the season. For contrast, Oldham Athletic, who sit midtable, eight and nine places above the relegation zone, have only conceded 12, half of what either side’s current record stands at.

In their last five games alone, the hosts have conceded eight and scored seven, whilst the away side have conceded nine and have also scored seven in their last five in all competitions.

Although this will be a cagey affair between two poor sides, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a fair few goals in this game.

Third Prediction for Shrewsbury Town vs Newport County – Both teams to score – 9/10

Despite the fact that neither side have been great in front of goal this season, this is a good opportunity for either side to improve their record, due to the poor defensive records both sides possess.

As mentioned, in their last five, both sides have scored seven, which is an average of over one goal per game, although their league record says otherwise.

Whilst neither side have the worst record in the league in terms of scoring, they also don’t have the best record in front of goal, but that may change in this clash due to neither side being able to defend.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, neither side is in great form, as their league positions reflect. In all competitions, both sides have lost their last two in a row, with the hosts winning two of their last five games in all competitions. Newport’s record is worse, the side winning just once in their last five and three times in the fourth tier this season.

Three points will prove crucial for either side, with both sides able to climb the table and out of the relegation zone if other results go in their favour.

Since 2011, these sides have faced each other just three times, two of these clashes coming in the 2014/15 League Two season, a season which saw Salop win promotion to the third tier. The hosts have won two of these matches, with the other fixture ending level after 90 minutes. Last time these sides met, Shrewsbury won all three points in Wales thanks to a second-half strike from substitute Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro.
