Tensions Rise as Hallgrimsson Suggests Ipswich Town Have Risked Szmodics’ Fitness

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has claimed that Ipswich Town may have been ‘overloading’ forward Sammie Szmodics, as the player continues to battle a series of injury setbacks.

The Ireland boss suggested that Szmodics’ repeated absences from international duty have been linked to the heavy demands placed on him by his club, adding that the 30-year-old has consistently been honest about his condition when called up for Ireland.

Recurring Injuries and Growing Frustration

Szmodics underwent ankle surgery in March after a sequence of setbacks curtailed his Premier League season. Although he made a brief return as a substitute on the final day of the campaign, swelling in the same ankle prevented him from featuring regularly for either club or country.

His return in September brought further complications, with another withdrawal from international duty followed by minor knee surgery in late October after Ipswich’s 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Hallgrimsson defended the forward amid criticism from supporters, stressing that Szmodics’ absences were legitimate and medically verified.

“They have been playing him and overloading him, maybe, at times,” said the Ireland manager. “But he has always been honest with me and I believe him 100 per cent when he says he is not fit. He would play for us every time if he was.”

Szmodics has endured a disrupted 2025, making only 7 starts and 4 substitute appearances for Ipswich Town this season, while also managing a single international start for Ireland.

His limited availability has coincided with a busy fixture schedule for both club and country, and Hallgrimsson’s comments have reignited the debate over player workload management across the EFL and beyond.

No Contact Between Ireland and McKenna

Hallgrimsson also revealed that he has never spoken directly with Kieran McKenna, despite 5 members of recent Ireland squads being Ipswich players. The Icelandic coach noted that modern communication structures often mean discussions are handled through medical departments rather than head coaches.

“It’s more complex today than it was in the past,” he explained. “You need to go through certain processes, so it’s usually through the medical team first if it’s a question of fitness.”

The lack of direct dialogue between international and club management has drawn attention given the overlap between Ipswich’s high-intensity style and Ireland’s physically demanding international fixtures. Szmodics’ case highlights the fine balance required between maintaining club form and managing long-term fitness, particularly for players returning from serious injury.

McKenna’s squad, which also includes Dara O’Shea, Jack Taylor, and Kasey McAteer, has been praised for its energy and pressing, but Hallgrimsson’s remarks raise questions over whether that intensity could be contributing to fatigue among key players.

With Szmodics currently sidelined and his recovery timeline unclear, Ipswich will hope to have their talismanic forward back soon as they continue to push for consistency in a congested Championship campaign.

For Hallgrimsson, the priority remains ensuring that Szmodics returns to full health before any future international involvement. “It has been tough for him,” he said. “He has always wanted to represent Ireland, but he has to be fit to do that. There is no point risking long-term damage.”
