Cameron Burgess has apologised to Swansea City supporters after scoring two own goals against former club Ipswich Town in a heavy 4-1 defeat on Saturday.
The 30-year-old defender, who left Portman Road in the summer, endured a torrid afternoon as Ipswich ran out comfortable winners in South Wales to deepen Swansea’s early-season struggles.
Two own goals and a painful reunion
Burgess’ first own goal came midway through the second half when he deflected a driven shot from Leif Davis past his own goalkeeper.
Minutes later, misfortune struck again as he turned a Jens Cajuste cross into the net to gift his former club a fourth goal of the match.

The Australian international could only watch as Ipswich, led by Kieran McKenna, maintained their fine attacking rhythm in front of a jubilant away end.
It was a cruel afternoon for Burgess, who had been a key figure in Ipswich’s back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League. His consistency, strength, and leadership made him a popular figure at Portman Road, and many of the travelling supporters who once celebrated his tackles were among those reacting sympathetically to his nightmare day.

Burgess responds with honesty and humility
Rather than shy away from the criticism, Burgess addressed the situation head-on in a heartfelt message to Swansea fans on social media.
“I don’t usually say much on social media, and I will probably take this post down soon, but just wanted to write a message to the Swansea City fans that want to hear it. I know how much this club means to you all and how much pride you take in being a part of it.
“As a player, I hear your criticism and you won’t hear any excuses from me. I am my own worst critic, believe me, and it’s my sole purpose to put things right on the pitch personally by showing what you all expect to see. Cam.”
His words were met with widespread support from both sets of fans, many praising the defender’s openness and integrity. It was a rare public message from a player known for keeping a low profile off the pitch, and it demonstrated a strong sense of accountability following what will have been a deeply frustrating experience.

Focus turns to recovery after international break
Burgess’ arrival at Swansea was viewed as a key part of the club’s rebuild under new management, but the South Wales side have struggled for rhythm in recent weeks. The loss to Ipswich leaves them 18th in the table heading into the international break, with defensive improvements now top of the agenda before the league resumes.
For Burgess, the focus will be on bouncing back quickly and repaying the supporters who showed patience and understanding after his honest statement. His response underlines a commitment to lead by example, and if he can rediscover the form that made him such a reliable presence at Ipswich, there is every reason to believe he will turn his Swansea chapter into a positive one.
