Chances Galore, Missing Spark: Another Point For Sheffield Wednesday As Norwich City Holt Losing Run

Norwich City ended their 6-match losing run at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday, in a game which both sides will rue missed chances.

This result perfectly encapsulated the goalscoring struggles of both sides. While the Canaries have top-end Championship players not firing, Wednesday, in administration and under transfer restrictions in the summer, have a lack of forward options at their disposal.

Fast Owls Start

Norwich should have taken the lead inside the opening 60 seconds, and once upon a time, you would have put money on Josh Sargent scoring this opportunity. But the USA international is now 10 games without a goal since his lightning-quick start to the season, where he scored 5 goals in his first 4 Championship games. However, on this occasion, Sargent latched onto Jovon Makama’s ball, but he sent a dinked effort the wrong side of the upright.

And they were quickly made to pay with a moment of magic from Wednesday’s skipper. Barry Bannan drove forward and let fly 30 yards from goal, sending a rocket into the top right-hand corner to light up this Bonfire night encounter. Hillsborough was treated to one of the loudest renditions of Hi Ho Sheffield Wednesday in recent times before kick-off, but the noise went up a notch when the ball hit the back of the net.

Bannan wasn’t done there, stinging the palms of visiting goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic from distance. Makama, who has been one of the few bright sparks for the Canaries in recent weeks, worked an opportunity for himself all on his own, earning a corner for his endeavours after a jinxing run.

The Owls remained on top, coming close to a second when Sean Fusire dragged an effort wide, before Jamal Lowe headed over from a wicked Harry Amass delivery. Norwich once again missed a gilt-edged opportunity when Oscar Schwartau rounded Ethan Horvath, but his initial touch was too heavy and the danger passed.

Canaries Fightback & Missed Chances

The second period became a contest of who could miss the best opportunity. Svante Ingelsson started it off when he pounced on a Canaries mistake, but found the foot of Kovacevic in the way of his effort. Schwartau again failed to bring the away side level when Sargent rolled the ball his way, sending his shot wide of the mark.

Lowe topped that when a moment of miscommunication between Kellen Fisher and his goalkeeper gifted the Owls striker an open goal, only to inexplicably miss. Straight down the other end, the East Anglian outfit finally punished the home side, cutting them apart. Sargent unselfishly squared to Mathias Kvistgaarden, who made no mistake with the finish.

Jeffrey Schlupp almost turned the game on its head when he received a fortunate ricochet, but dragged an effort agonisingly wide of the goal. Yet again, there was quickly a chance up the other end when Bannan fed Fusire, but Kovacevic denied him. After a couple of half-chances for the Canaries, Henrik Pedersen’s side looked the more likely to nick it in the final 15 minutes.

The visiting goalkeeper had kept his side in the game with his shot-stopping, but threatened to gift the hosts a goal with his feet, and that was apparent again when his clearance was only as far as Ingelsson. But the Swede couldn’t find the target from near the halfway line, and further chances for the bright substitute Bailey Cadamarteri came and went. Norwich almost stole the points when Kvistgaarden was denied by a reaction save from Horvath to preserve a point.

What Comes Next?

The final international break of 2025 is around the corner, but not before one more Championship game for either side. Sheffield Wednesday have a long trip to the South Coast to face managerless Southampton, as they continue their fight to get back on to positive points.

Meanwhile, Norwich City face one of the sides the Saints were relegated with last season, Leicester City, whose manager Martí Cifuentes is also under pressure. Canaries boss Liam Manning remains in his job forenow, but he desperately needs 3 points this weekend.
