Peterborough United vs Cardiff City: Prediction, Lineups, Betting Tips & Odds (01/11)

Struggling Peterborough United host League One rivals Cardiff City in the first round of the FA Cup at the Weston Holmes Stadium on Saturday.

Our Three Predictions for Peterborough United vs Cardiff City

  • First Prediction: Cardiff City to win – 11/10
  • Second Prediction: Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 2/11
  • Third Prediction: Both teams to score – no – 11/8

First Prediction for Peterborough United vs Cardiff City – Cardiff City to win – 11/10

Although Peterborough may have a new manager bounce after replacing Darren Ferguson with experienced manager Luke Williams, Cardiff have proved that they are up to the task of trying to win promotion back to the Championship after dropping out of the second tier on the final day of last season.

Sat third in League One with a game in hand over title rivals Stockport County and Bradford City, Brian Barry-Murphy’s side have impressed in the third tier, whilst the Posh have done the opposite, and currently find themselves dead last in League One after a poor start.

In their last five league games, the hosts have won three, and have done well in cup competitions so far, beating Wrexham midweek in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The away side, on the other hand, were knocked out of the same competition in the first round by struggling League Two side Accrington Stanley.

Looking at recent form, as well as the League One table, it’s clear to see why Cardiff are the favourites in this FA Cup first-round clash.

Second Prediction for Peterborough United vs Cardiff City – Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 2/11

One of the reasons why Cardiff are where they are in the table is because of their ability to score goals, and lots of them. Barry-Murphy’s side have the joint third-best goalscoring record in the division, scoring 21 goals in 13 games, only beaten by the aforementioned Stockport and Bradford, who have played one more game in the league this season.

On average, 21 goals in 13 equate to 1.62 goals per game, which alone is more than the predicted 1.5 goals in this matchup. In their last five games in all competitions alone, they have scored eight goals. In addition to this, Posh have the third-worst record in terms of conceding goals in the third tier, conceding on average 1.69 goals per game, which Cardiff will know and try and exploit.

Based on the majority of the stats, there’s no doubt that we will see more than 1.5 goals scored in this matchup on Saturday.

Third Prediction for Peterborough United vs Cardiff City – Both teams to score – no – 11/8

Contrary to my other point, the hosts have struggled to score this season and have the worst scoring record in the third tier. On average, they score less than one goal per game, with 0.77 goals scored per game. On top of this, the away side have the second-best defensive record in League One, and have only conceded 11 goals in 13 games, which averages out to 0.85 goals per game.

Again, based on the stats, the Posh may struggle to score in this game, especially as the Bluebirds have such a strong defensive record.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, Peterborough’s poor start to the season has resulted in the now-former manager, Ferguson, losing his job, with ex-Notts County and Swansea City manager Williams taking the reins at the Weston Homes Stadium. It’s been the complete opposite for the Welsh outfit, who are in the picture to win promotion back to the Championship after being relegated from the second tier last season.

Whilst both sides would love to make it through to the second round of the cup, Cardiff certainly look the most likely to win this encounter. The Bluebirds sit third in League One, while their opponents, Posh, sit dead last in 24th.

Since 2010, these sides have faced each other eight times, in three different competitions, including the Championship, Carabao Cup and League One. The hosts have won half of these encounters, with Cardiff winning three. The other remaining result ended in a draw. Last time these sides met, earlier this season, Cardiff picked up all three points at home, second-half goals from Rubin Colwill and Ronan Kpakio ruling out Bradley Ihionvien’s early penalty.
