Birmingham City boss Chris Davies believes his side are close to turning performances into results as they prepare to host Portsmouth in the Championship this weekend.
Promoted from League One in April, the Blues sit 15th in the table after a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City extended their run to 1 win in 6 matches. Despite the dip in form, Davies is convinced progress is being made and that his team are close to a breakthrough.
Davies Demands Greater Attacking Edge
Speaking to BBC West Midlands, Davies said he remains encouraged by the team’s overall displays, even if goals have been hard to come by.
“Even like the Bristol game, I look at it and think we’re not a team that you wonder ‘how are they going to win a game?’ We just need to create more chances,” he explained.
“I don’t feel that we’re miles away.” 🗣️

The 39-year-old highlighted that his side have shown organisation and control but must find more urgency and creativity in the final third.
“There was a lot of good things in there in terms of limiting a good side to very few chances against us, having a certain element of control,” Davies continued. “But we did lack that penetration, that punch in the final third.”
The Birmingham boss, who succeeded Tony Mowbray, has emphasised the need for quicker ball movement and more runners in attacking areas if they are to start climbing the table.

Saturday’s visit of Portsmouth is the first of two home fixtures in four days, and Davies recognises the importance of the next stretch in shaping their season.
“Yes, it’s an important week for our season,” he said. “We’ve had a difficult run. We’ve hung in there. The Preston game was a big one to win, and win away from home.”
Birmingham are aiming to take advantage of a favourable schedule, with three of their next four matches at St Andrew’s.
“We’ve proved we can win at home, away, clean sheets, score goals, set-pieces — we’ve had it all, but it’s about putting it all together a bit more consistently,” Davies added.
Opponents Portsmouth, who came up from League One the previous year, are just two points behind in 18th. Davies was full of respect for his opposite number, praising the work done by John Mousinho since taking charge at Fratton Park.
“He’s done a very good job over the time that he’s been there,” Davies said. “They’re very competitive, got an English core of players, but with a lot of experience in there. They’ll make it difficult; they can play too.”
Birmingham will hope their home crowd can help end a frustrating run and kickstart their push towards the top half of the Championship table.
