Swansea City head coach Alan Sheehan has urged supporters to “not be silenced” as his side prepare to host Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
The Championship club face a huge test against Pep Guardiola’s team, who have lifted the trophy 6 times in the past 12 years and are currently fifth in the Premier League.
Sheehan calls for unity and belief
Sheehan, appointed as Swansea City’s permanent head coach in April, has challenged the Jack Army to make their presence felt at the Swansea.com Stadium. The Irishman believes the crowd will be crucial in helping the Swans compete against a side packed with world-class talent.
“We want the fans to be right behind the team,” Sheehan said. “You’re talking about a world-class team that will try to quieten them as much as possible, so don’t be silenced. They can frustrate you with how much of the ball they have, but we have to be compact and clinical.”

The 38-year-old is under no illusions about the challenge his team face. Manchester City’s squad depth and technical quality will likely dominate possession, but Sheehan insists Swansea must show bravery and discipline to create a memorable night in South Wales.
“We’ll have to be perfect in all elements,” he added. “You hope their individuals have an off night, and when opportunities come, you have to take them.”

Guardiola’s dominance meets Swansea’s spirit
Sheehan’s opposite number Pep Guardiola is one of the most decorated managers in the game, boasting 6 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 4 EFL Cups and a Champions League since arriving at Manchester City in 2016.
By contrast, Sheehan is embarking on his first full managerial role, but he welcomes the challenge of facing one of the sport’s greats.
“Obviously, for me, someone very new in my managerial career, you understand what you’re up against,” Sheehan said. “It’s incredibly difficult, but your job is to motivate your players and respect the opposition. We want to be the best versions of ourselves.”
Wednesday’s tie also revives memories of Swansea City’s 2019 FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City, when Bersant Celina and Matt Grimes fired the Swans into a 2-0 lead before a late comeback from Guardiola’s side saw them lose 3-2.
The defeat was marred by refereeing controversy, with Sergio Aguero’s winning goal allowed to stand despite replays showing he was offside.
For Sheehan, this new chapter represents a chance to create different memories. The Swans sit mid-table in the Championship, but a spirited cup performance could provide the spark their season needs.
