In what has been a positive week for Sheffield Wednesday after Dejphon Chansiri’s effective removal in charge of the club, there may be more good news ahead.
The Owls were finally freed from Chansiri’s ownership last week, with administrators taking charge at Hillsborough. While they were hit with an immediate 12-point deduction, that has done little to dampen the optimism within the fanbase of brighter days ahead.
Bannan Gives Players’ Update
The final months of Chansiri’s time in charge at Hillsborough brought some turbulent times, with beloved manager Danny Rohl finally stepping away from his role and a further transfer embargo being placed on the club, which seemed to ban them from making any summer signings. While some new faces came in, notably Harry Amass on loan from Manchester United, there are still restrictions placed on the club until 2027.
However, club captain Barry Bannan has since lifted the lid on the current transfer situation heading towards January in an interview with TalkSPORT. (Quotes Via Sheffield Star):
“From what the administrators have said, maybe in January we’ll be allowed to bring in loans and free transfers. But at the minute because there are still embargoes we won’t be allowed to sign players for fees.
“That might change, it might not, but going into January if we still had the previous chairman then we wouldn’t be allowed to sign players either way – frees, loans or whatever…. So that’s better for us, that maybe in January we can try and get some help on board to try and help us out.”
The Scottish midfielder extended his stay in the Steel City after a brief period of being without a contract, yet another symptom of how dire the situation became prior to the administrators took charge.

Reinforcements Possible
This new update from Bannan signifies that the worst times in the club’s history are now fully behind them, and everyone can look forward. A slight lifting of the embargoes on the club means that Wednesday can now bring in quality options to support their existing squad, most notably in net after Henrik Pedersen had to activate an emergency loan to sign Bristol City‘s Joe Lumley.
While survival is now a massive ask for the club to reach, putting themselves in a good position in terms of squad could give them the solid foundation they need to bounce back if they head down into League One.
