Peterborough United are set to announce Darren Ferguson’s successor on Tuesday, according to The Peterborough Telegraph.
There’s no getting away from the fact that it’s been a disastrous campaign for Posh thus far. Having secured a disappointing 18th-placed finish last season, they still managed to win a second successive EFL Trophy to soften the blow.
An exodus of key first team players followed, leaving a new-look squad looking disjointed. The Cambridgeshire-based side picked up just 1 win from their opening 7 games, leaving them firmly in a relegation battle.
Ferguson then picked up back-to-back victories over Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle, but a 3-0 hammering by Lincoln City at the Weston Homes Stadium brought them back to reality. Despite a poor performance, a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Burton Albion earlier this month brought relief. However, a 2-1 home defeat against Blackpool in a bottom-of-the-table clash signalled the end of the legendary manager’s fourth reign.
“Devastated” MacAnthony Makes Tough Decision
Three hours after the full time whistle on Saturday, owner Darragh MacAnthony announced that Ferguson had departed the club. In an emotional statement, he said:
“I have made the decision to terminate Darren Fergusons contract after today’s game. The decision wasn’t taken lightly but it’s a decision I feel is the correct one for the football club.
“The Gaffer is for me the greatest manager in the club’s history who I will always consider to be part of my family and the club’s family. There are too many wonderful moments to mention here but those many historical celebrated moments I will cherish and remember forever.
Probably the nicest “sacking” statement in football history. https://t.co/EpPPBEe7o4

“Yes, we have had down moments, and it hasn’t always gone to plan but he has managed this football club like it’s his own. I am devastated he is no longer our manager and will miss the everyday chats we have regarding life and football. I wish him and his phenomenally supportive family nothing but love and respect and the best for the future.
“This season has been challenging on all fronts for our great football club. It’s time to go again, freshen up and enter a new period of growth in all aspects on and off the pitch. Thank you to the brilliant supporters who continue to stick with us through good and bad. Today is another tough day but from Monday onwards we start healing and moving forward. Goodbye Legend and Thank You!”
Luke Williams Set For Football Return
Almost immediately after the announcement, former Notts County and Swansea City boss Luke Williams emerged as the front runner. The 44-year-old has been out of the sport since leaving the Swans in February, even taking up a role at Bristol Airport in the summer to pass the time.
There was some confusion regarding to appointment after League One rivals Reading parted company with Noel Hunt over the weekend but it is claimed that this ‘is wide of the mark’. As such, a move to London Road looks to be on the cards.
It was probably the right time for him to go but his legend status at Peterborough is untarnished. The greatest ever at London Road. #pufc pic.twitter.com/q7YaiEa2fs

Writer’s View
If indeed Peterborough do announce Luke Williams as Darren Ferguson’s successor, it would be a fantastic appointment. He is a popular figure within football and is best remembered for guiding Notts County back into the Football League.
Whilst his time at Swansea didn’t work out, the 44-year-old adhered himself to the fans. This relationship led to an amicable end and Darragh MacAnthony has clearly had him in mind to enter the dugout at the Weston Homes Stadium. His first task will be keeping Posh in League One. From there, a return to the upper reaches of the division and a potential promotion push will be the aim.
