The Sky Blues currently sit top with 22 points having won four out of their last five.
Raining Goals In Warwickshire
Coventry City’s 2025-26 Championship campaign has ignited into a thrilling start, with the Sky Blues perched atop the table after 10 matches, amassing 22 points. Under Frank Lampard, appointed last season the team has embraced an exhilarating, attack-minded philosophy, outscoring rivals by a staggering 22+ goa difference to lead the division’s offensive charts.
A standout performance came in August with a 7-1 thrashing of Queens Park Rangers at the Coventry Building Society Arena, tying for the highest-scoring match of the season. Haji Wright led with a hat-trick, while Jack Rudoni and Victor Torp each added a brace, and Brandon Thomas-Asante scored once, exploiting QPR’s defensive frailties.
QPR managed a consolation goal from Richard Kone, but their 31.6% aerial duel success and 27 recoveries underscored their inability to contain Coventry’s 10 shots on target from 18 attempts. This result, Coventry’s biggest home win, exposed QPR’s early vulnerabilities under new manager Julien Stéphan, leaving them 22nd with one point from three matches.
Coventry continued their rampage with back-to-back thumping away victories. In late August, they dismantled Millwall at The Den 4-0, with Wright and Thomas-Asante leading the scoring, capitalizing on Millwall’s defensive errors. A week later in September, they crushed Sheffield Wednesday 5-0 at Hillsborough, with Torp’s midfield dominance and Ellis Simms’ clinical finishing overwhelming the Owls. The run culminated in a thrilling 5-3 away win against Derby County, where Wright and Rudoni’s pace and precision outmatched Derby’s defense in a high-octane clash.
Goalscoring has been the hallmark, netting 29 strikes at an average of 2.42 per game, fueled by 159 shots which adds to an astounding 17.67 per match
American forward Haji Wright reigns as top marksman with 8 goals, blending pace and precision. Striker Brandon Thomas-Asante follows with 5, his aerial prowess pivotal in set-pieces, while midfielder Fredrik Torp chips in another 5 from midfield, adding creativity. Ellis Simms and Jack Rudoni contribute 2 apiece, with wingers like Tatsuhiro Sakamoto providing width in this breathtaking attack.
This blistering start, blending youth and experience, positions Coventry as frontrunners, though tougher tests loom.

Lampards Revival
Frank Lampard’s renewal as Coventry City manager has earnt him an extended initial 2.5-year contract through 2028, rewarding his transformative impact just 10 months after appointment last November.
The former England midfielder, who began his coaching journey at Derby County in 2018, guiding them to the Championship play-off final despite off-field turmoil. Next took his boyhood Chelsea’s helm in 2019. There, he secured an eighth-place Premier League finish amid a transfer embargo, but was later sacked after 18 months.
A brief Everton stint stabilised the Toffees against relegation fears, though it ended in dismissal. Lampard also served as Chelsea’s interim boss in 2023, yielding mixed results.
At Coventry, succeeding sacked long-servant Mark Robins, Lampard has revolutionised the Sky Blues from mid-table to Championship leaders. His possession-based, high-pressing style has unleashed 29 goals in 12 games, with stars like Haji Wright thriving. Back-to-back 4-0 away wins and a 7-1 rout have exemplified their attacking flair, positioning Coventry for a return to the top flght for the first time in almost 25 years.
Praise From Lampard
When asked about success of the defensive setup, Lampard said:
“Well, massively important because of the feeling that I think it gives the rest of the team. There has been a consistency in selection which I think is helpful for the partnership and that unit of the team, specifically.
“But yeah, and the work as well. We work a lot on the back four, making sure they’re connected. We try and get our line as high as we can but we also have to be ready to drop, all these little small details and they’re all really engaging, both the boys that are playing and actually the ones that are fighting to get in.
“Luke Woolfenden has come in and he’s training great. He’s training really, really well but at the minute, you know, the boys are deserving to stay, as Woolfy would do if he got in and did the same. And that kind of competition is great.”
