Exeter City welcome Reading to St James Park on Saturday afternoon with both teams aiming for three points to move up the League One table.
Our Three Predictions For Exeter City vs Reading
- First Prediction:Â Match Result – Draw – 23/10
- Second Prediction:Â Under 2.5 Goals – 5/6
- Third Prediction:Â Total Reading Goals – Under 1.5 – 8/15
First Prediction For Exeter City vs Reading – Match Result – Draw – 23/10
If there is a team that is overdue a draw, it is Exeter. They halted a run of four consecutive defeats with a smash-and-grab victory over Lincoln City, but it’s fair to say that it was a win they didn’t deserve. The game looked on course for a drab 0-0 before Kevin McDonald’s added time winner, which still would have been a result that flattered the Grecians.
Gary Caldwell’s side are one of only two teams in League One that haven’t yet drawn a game. However, four of their last five outings have been settled by a solitary goal. This includes two defeats at St James Park to Port Vale and Huddersfield Town.
In contrast, Reading head into this game on the back of two 1-1 draws, whilst three of their five games on the road have ended level. The Royals are yet to win on the road, having tasted defeat at Lincoln City and Barnsley. With Exeter having recently struggled in front of their own supporters and Reading yet to win on the road, it could be that the two teams cancel each other out.
Second Prediction For Exeter City vs Reading – Under 2.5 Goals – 5/6
Exeter have built a reputation for being hard to break down under Gary Caldwell, but they aren’t known for being free scoring either. As a result, they’re involved in low scoring games more often than not and only Bolton Wanderers and Northampton Town have seen fewer games with less than three goals.
The Grecians’ 2-1 defeat at Stevenage is the only game in their last five league outings that has gone over this market. Three of those fixtures ended 1-0 with the other finishing 2-0.
Like Exeter, Reading rank low in League One in games that have produced over 2.5 goals. Four of their 10 fixtures have hit that figure, although their last two have finished 1-1.
Third Prediction For Exeter City vs Reading – Total Reading Goals – Under 1.5 – 8/15
Reading started the season slowly, scoring just once in their opening three games. Things have improved recently and they haven’t failed to score since a 2-0 defeat against Huddersfield Town in August.
Still, the Royals have found the net just once in their last three outings in all competitions, picking up two 1-1 draws in the league before a narrow 1-0 victory over Milton Keynes Dons in the EFL Trophy earlier this week. It is likely that they will score but Exeter are extremely resilient at the back and Noel Hunt’s side may struggle to break them down.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Exeter have had an extremely inconsistent start to the season, with August showing just how difficult they are to predict. They began the campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers before recording their biggest win of the season so far when they hammered Blackpool 4-1.
A 2-1 home loss against Mansfield Town was a big disappointment, especially as they beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 at Adams Park three days later. A trip to Northampton Town ended in another defeat (2-0), although a 3-0 win over Peterborough United lifted the Grecians into the top half of the table.
September proved disastrous for Gary Caldwell’s team. They lost all four of their league games, picking up zero points against Rotherham United (1-0), Port Vale (2-0), Stevenage (2-1) and Huddersfield Town (1-0). However, they ended their poor form last weekend when they scored an added time winner to beat in-form Lincoln City 1-0 at the LNER Stadium.
Reading lost their opening three games of the campaign, going down 2-0 to both Lincoln and Huddersfield before a 2-1 home defeat against AFC Wimbledon. They got some points on the board towards the end of August though with successive away draws at Bolton (2-2) and Wycombe (1-1). A first win followed with a narrow 1-0 victory over Port Vale before the month closed.
Their first league game in September brought a 3-2 loss at Barnsley but the Royals recovered to beat Leyton Orient 2-1 a week later. They travel to St James Park on the back of two 1-1 draws against Stockport County and Mansfield Town.
Reading hold the vastly superior record in this fixture over the years. Recently, they haven’t tasted defeat against Exeter since August 2023 and won 2-1 on their visit to St James Park last season. Prior to that, the Royals dished out a 9-0 hammering in the EFL Trophy in September 2023.
Overall, there has been 88 previous clashes between the two teams, with Reading winning 50. Exeter have emerged victorious 24 times whilst the other 14 have ended level.
