Our Three Predictions for Shrewsbury Town vs Cambridge United

  • First Prediction: Cambridge United to win – 23/10
  • Second Prediction: Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 4/9
  • Third Prediction: Both teams to score – no – 4/5

First Prediction for Shrewsbury Town vs Cambridge United – Cambridge United to win – 23/10

As their different league positions suggest, Neil Harris’ side have had a much better start to the season after the disappointment of relegation, while their opponents, Shrewsbury, have struggled with life back in League Two, and currently sit in the League Two relegation zone, picking up just six points from a possible 33. In contrast, the away side have picked up 18 points, which means they currently sit eighth, level on points with MK Dons, who currently occupy the last play-off spot. In their last five, United have only lost once, in a Carabao Cup tie against Premier League side Fulham, and have won their last two games back to back against League Two rivals Crawley Town and League One side Luton Town. This puts them in good stead for this weekend’s tie, against a poor Shrewsbury side who haven’t won in their last four games, and are still yet to win a game at home this season in their five attempts. Although their opponents haven’t got the best record in terms of winning on the road, the way this overall season has gone for both sides has to make the visiting team a favourite in this encounter on Saturday.

Second Prediction for Shrewsbury Town vs Cambridge United – Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 4/9

One reason why Harris’ side have had such a strong start to this season is their ability to score goals and also their ability to defend them from going in at the other end. In 11 games, they’ve scored 14 goals, which isn’t one of the greatest records, but they’ve only conceded 10 goals at the other end, which is the joint second best. Their opponents, on the other hand, have the third-worst defensive record, conceding 20 goals in 11 games, which the visitors will look to exploit in order to come away with a result away from home. On average, the U’s score 1.27 goals per game, whilst their opponents concede 1.82 goals per game. Plus, with their recent form meaning they’ve scored six goals in their last two games in all competitions, Cambridge will be confident and ready coming into this fixture, so it’s fair to say that we could see over 1.5 goals scored in this fixture, especially with Shrewsbury’s dodgy record at the back.

Third Prediction for Shrewsbury Town vs Cambridge United – Both teams to score – 4/5

Contrary to my other point, it looks unlikely that both sides will score in this encounter, especially seeing as the hosts have one of the worst goal records in the division so far this season, with their record only being better than 22nd-placed Cheltenham Town, who have scored six, which is one less than Michael Appleton’s side. On average, they score just 0.64 goals per game and have scored in five of their 11 games in the fourth tier. On top of this, two of these seven goals have come on home turf, and with Cambridge’s record defensively, the second-best in the league, it’s easy to see why the hosts haven’t been backed to score in this matchup.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, both sides have had completely opposite starts to the season since suffering relegation from the third tier. The hosts have only won one game, and currently sit 23rd, one point off 24th-placed side Newport County, whilst the U’s are hunting for an immediate return to League One. They sit eighth, level on points with seventh-placed MK Dons, and only three points off the automatic promotion places.

With both sides at the opposite end of the table, three points could prove to be crucial at this stage. Three points could give the Shrews more confidence as they look to improve on their abysmal start to the season, whilst Cambridge need to pick up points if they want to continue to challenge for promotion.

Since 2014, these sides have played each other 12 times, in multiple different competitions, including both the third and fourth tiers, as well as the EFL Trophy and FA Cup. Cambridge have won the majority of these ties, winning five times, whilst their opponents, Shrewsbury, have only won three times. The other four games have ended level after full-time. The last time these two sides met last season, the U’s took all three points at Crowd Meadow thanks to a singular second-half goal from former Cambridge loanee Dom Ballard.
