Shock Candidate Emerges As Potential Sheffield Wednesday Buyer

Former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has emerged as a potential candidate to take over at Sheffield Wednesday, according to journalist Alan Biggs.

The ongoing crisis at Hillsborough continues to deepen week by week, with the latest round of unpaid salaries leaving the Owls at risk of a points deduction. The saga also saw a host of first team players depart in the summer, meaning Wednesday began the season with a vastly depleted squad.

It’s no surprise to see the club languishing in the relegation places in the Championship. Supporters have held several protests against current owner Dejphon Chansiri, culminating in some fans storming the pitch during last weekend’s 5-0 defeat against Coventry City.

Ashley Emerges As Potential Buyer

It has been widely reported that Chansiri is holding out for £100 million, whilst talkSPORT host Simon Jordan suggested last week that an independent regulator could step in and force a sale.

Fresh reports emerged earlier today that several candidates remain interested in the club, which includes Wednesday fan David Richards and business tycoon Mike Ashley. The latter is best known within the football world for his stint at Newcastle.

He first purchased the Magpies in 2007 but became vastly unpopular in the North East. Although he eventually sold the club in 2020, he did so having spent the best part of a decade under serious pressure from supporters.

The Frasers owner controversially acquired the CBS Arena in 2022 and almost immediately issued Coventry City an eviction notice. A deal was eventually reached between the parties before the Sky Blues eventually bought the stadium earlier this year.

Writer’s View

Mike Ashley has been linked with a number of clubs since selling Newcastle in 2020. The most recent was Reading, although that turned out to be nothing but speculation. It appears as if there may be something behind the Sheffield Wednesday story and he wouldn’t be the worst option. Valued at over £3 billion, he certainly knows how to build a successful business and he would have no intention of buying the Owls if he didn’t think he could stabilise the club for a future profit. He won’t be the most popular choice but it goes without saying that he is infinitely better than what they have at the moment.
