Huddersfield Town Manager Makes Key Season Admission

Newly appointed Huddersfield Town Lee Grant has emphasised his need for his side to “stick together and work” as the club navigates their way through an inconsistent season so far.

This comes off the back of a 2-1 loss to Stockport County over the weekend; however, the Terriers have this weekend off after their game against Luton Town was called off due to international call-ups.

New Man At The Helm

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant started his transition to coaching after retiring in 2022. He joined Ipswich Town as first-team coach, being a part of the staff that helped the club achieve back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League. In May, he was appointed Huddersfield Town manager on a three-year deal, his first as a head coach.

Inconsistency

Huddersfield Town started the League One season with an emphatic 3-0 home win over Leyton Orient. After 11 games, they sit in 6th place with 19 points: six wins, one draw, and four losses, scoring 17 goals and conceding 12. Strong home form includes a 3-2 victory against Peterborough United and a 2-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers. Joe Taylor leads the line with three goals, and Alfie May has added two assists. A 1-2 loss to Stockport and a draw with Burton Albion highlight finishing issues. Grant’s style aims to be high press with high energy, but consistency needs work. After the international break, they face Bolton Wanderers on the 16th of October at home, a crucial match in their ambitions to return to the Championship.

Grant’s Comments

In an interview with HTTV after Saturdays game, Grant said:

“Work, if I’m being really frank. I feel like there is for me some things that we have to work really hard on to put right.

“We’ve got to start executing when we find our moments. We’ve found moments again today and not been able to take them, and that’s disappointing, because in a game where we are below par in my opinion, still having those opportunities and moments that we create gives you an opportunity to get back in, and find a way back into the game, and we didn’t take those moments.

“We’ve brought in and put together a squad that can really challenge this year, and we have a real good chunk of it not available to us.”

Huddersfield Town’s League One campaign shows promise despite inconsistency. Sitting 6th with 19 points after 11 games, their attacking spark and home form stand out the most. Grant’s high-pressing system is taking shape, but some clubs’ trigger-happy sackings could be their downfall.  Patience with Grant should be crucial, his vision could deliver promotion. Fans should keep faith as the Terriers prepare to face Bolton Wanderers post-international break.
