Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has confirmed that midfielder John Lundstram will undergo medical tests after suffering a calf injury in the win over Sheffield United.
The Tigers secured a valuable victory against the Blades, but the result was overshadowed by fresh concerns over Lundstram’s fitness and the absence of Kasey Palmer from the matchday squad.
Mixed Emotions For Jakirović After Sheffield United Win
Lundstram, who joined Hull from Rangers in the summer, lasted just 15 minutes of the Yorkshire derby before being forced off. The injury comes at a crucial time, with the midfielder having established himself as a key figure in Jakirović’s system. The 30-year-old received treatment on the pitch before making his way down the tunnel, greeted by jeers from the visiting supporters at his former club.
“He felt his calf,” said Jakirović after the game. “I didn’t want to take a risk because we had options on the bench. He couldn’t help us. We will see after the medical examination to see how big the damage is.”
The Croatian boss also revealed that striker Kyle Joseph missed the fixture due to illness, adding to a growing list of concerns ahead of next weekend’s clash. However, it was his comments about Palmer that drew particular attention, as the playmaker was omitted from the squad entirely.
“He was not ready for this game. Not mentally ready,” Jakirović admitted. “You need to show your quality on the pitch. No one is above the club for me. I have no problems with that.”

Hull Looking To Build Momentum Amid Squad Challenges
Hull’s 2–0 win over Sheffield United eased some pressure following a mixed start to the Championship campaign. The victory lifted Jakirović’s side into mid-table and offered a reminder of their attacking potential, even with key absentees. Yet the loss of Lundstram could prove costly if scans confirm a significant injury, given his leadership and experience in the middle of the park.
Palmer’s omission also raises questions about his role in the squad moving forward. The attacking midfielder has featured sporadically this season and will now need to respond positively if he hopes to regain the trust of his manager.
Writer’s View
This was a much-needed win for Hull City, but the relief was tempered by Lundstram’s early withdrawal. His injury could leave a gap in both quality and experience at a time when the Tigers are beginning to find rhythm.
Jakirović’s forthright comments on Palmer underline his determination to maintain standards within the dressing room. If Hull can channel that discipline into consistency on the pitch, this victory may yet prove a turning point in their season.
