Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has emerged as one of the frontrunners to replace Russell Martin at Rangers, according to The Sheffield Star.
The German landed his first managerial role when he replaced Darren Moore at Hillsborough in October 2023. He was handed the seemingly impossible task of keeping the Owls in the Championship.
Despite spending the majority of the season in the relegation zone, some excellent form towards the end of the campaign lifted them out of the bottom three. They eventually secured survival on the final day with a 2-0 win over Sunderland.
With off-field antics constantly hitting the headlines, Rohl remained in charge. The 36-year-old quickly became one of the hottest young coaches in European football and achieved an impressive mid-table finish last season.
The former Bayern Munich coach was heavily linked with a move to the Bundesliga during the summer and failed to return to pre-season training. However, he performed a dramatic U-turn in July, but with relationships soured, he left the club before the start of the new term.
Rangers Add Rohl To Shortlist
Scottish giants Rangers are on the hunt for a new manager after parting company with Russell Martin over the weekend. The former Southampton boss was only appointed in June but endured a nightmare start to life at Ibrox.
The Glasgow-based outfit have won just one of their opening seven Scottish Premiership fixtures, leaving them eighth in the table. They’ve also endured a horrid time in Europe and were eliminated from the Champions League at the Qualifying Stage following a 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge.
The final straw came yesterday when Martin could only manage a 1-1 draw with Falkirk, and he was dismissed after just 123 days. This is the shortest managerial tenure in Rangers’ history.
A number of names have already been linked to the vacant position, with former boss Steven Gerrard considered the frontrunner. However, it is claimed that Rohl is also a contender after he was considered in the summer. He is a more attractive option this time around though, as no compensation would need to be paid to Sheffield Wednesday.
Writer’s View
There’s little doubt that Danny Rohl is a name that is going to be linked with a number of positions in the coming weeks and months. He is likely to be under serious consideration at Ibrox, but Rangers will possibly prefer a move for Steven Gerrard. The former Liverpool and England midfielder enjoyed considerable success during his previous stint north of the border and remains the last man to deliver a league title to the Scottish giants. If Rohl is unsuccessful here, expect him to be considered by a host of Championship clubs in the near future.
