Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Accrington Stanley head into this fixture in mixed form, having won two but lost three of their last five matches. They opened their Vertu Trophy campaign with a 2-2 draw away at Fleetwood Town with Isaac Heath and Alex Henderson getting the goals that gave Stanley a two goal lead. They would eventually claim a point but lose the extra point on penalties.

Defeat in the league followed that shootout loss, a disappointing reverse at then bottom side Cheltenham Town who were winless until that point. Accrington got back to winning ways in their next match at home to Colchester United with a solitary Isaac Sinclair strike enough for victory. Sinclair was again on target away at MK Dons in their next match, as he and Charlie Caton scored to win 2-1 at Stadium MK.

Caton scored again the following week but this time it was merely a consolation as Walsall ran out 3-1 winners at Wham Stadium before a second straight loss away at Barnet.

Accrington Stanley have only scored seven league goals this season and two in this competition, with their top scorer Tyler Watson scoring three times and Charlie Brown providing two assists. Stanley have conceded 13 goals so far at an average of 1.3 per game and have kept just two clean sheets.

Port Vale have lost just once in their last five outings and that defeat came against Premier League leaders Arsenal in the Carabao Cup third round. They have not lost a league game for over month and started this competition with a comprehensive victory over Leeds United’s Academy side.

The youngsters from Elland Road took the lead at Vale Park only for the hosts to strike back convincingly through goals from Ruari Paton, Jack Shorrock, Ronan Curtis and a late Mo Faal effort.

Vale’s league form since has been superb, being beaten by Leyton Orient before winning on the road at Exeter City thanks to Paton and Devante Cole and then beating Mansfield Town in dramatic fashion on home soil. Davante Cole was again on target against the ten man Stags before Rhys Oates equalised late on. A Ronan Curtis penalty in the fifth minute of added time eventually sealed all three points for Moore’s men.

Following the Arsenal defeat, a tricky trip to Oakwell to face Barnsley was successfully navigated thanks to Jordan Gabriel and Ryan Croasdale before a somewhat disappointing 0-0 home draw with Northampton Town last time out.

Port Vale have scored ten league goals so far this season and managed four in their first game in this competition. Devante Cole leads the way with three strikes and Ruari Paton has chipped in with two assists. Defensively, Darren Moore’s side have been solid, conceding less than a goal per game and keeping five clean sheets.

These sides have met 14 times since 2010 including two FA Cup matches. The record is fairly evenly split, with Vale winning six matches compared to Accrington’s five. Last season, Vale remained undefeated against their opponents as they claimed four points on their way to promotion back to League One.

The meeting at Wham Stadium looked to have brought three points for Stanley as Shaun Whalley and Donald Love had given them a 2-0 lead as the game entered added time. However, Jayden Stockley and Antwoine Hackford had other ideas and rescued a point for Vale, with both goals coming in added time.

In the reverse fixture, Vale were already ahead through Stockley when Tom Sang was sent off in the 13th minute. Tyler Walton got Stanley back on level terms before Lorent Tolaj settled it. Accrington Stanley’s last win in this fixture came in April 2023 when the pair met in League One. An own goal, Harvey Rodgers and Aaron Pressley provided the goals for a 3-0 home win.

In the 14 meetings, their have been 46 goals with Accrington scoring 21 times and Port Vale 25. Despite the glut of goals, both sides have managed to keep three clean sheets each.
