Stockport County make the short trip to the Peninsula Stadium in the Vertu Trophy to face Salford City, with both sides looking for three points that would effectively seal their passage into the knockout stages.
Our Three Predictions For Salford City vs Stockport County:
- First Prediction For Salford City vs Stockport County: Match Result – Draw – 14/5
- Second Prediction For Salford City vs Stockport County: Over 3.5 Goals – 7/5
- Third Prediction For Salford City vs Stockport County: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 8/15
First Prediction For Salford City vs Stockport County: Match Result – Draw – 14/5
In the EFL Trophy this season, Salford got their campaign up and running with a comfortable two-nil victory at Wigan Athletic, thanks to second-half goals from Ollie Turton and Cole Stockton to give the Ammies the best possible start to the competition. In November, Wolverhampton Wanderers U21’s are the visitors to Moor Lane. Wolves’ youth side were well beaten by Stockport County in the opening game of Group A, despite leading two-nil after twelve minutes. Nathan Lowe’s double soon drew them level, before further quickfire goals from Odin Bailey and Wesley Okoduwa had the game tied at three apiece. But there was time for a star to emerge, in the shape of sixteen-year-old Joe Astles, who became County’s youngest-ever goalscorer with a late brace. The Hatters host Wigan in their final game next month. Expect a tight encounter to end in a draw, which would leave both sides needing a result in the final game to progress.
Second Prediction For Salford City vs Stockport County: Over 3.5 Goals – 7/5
Only two League One sides have bettered County’s seventeen league goals this season, still managing to find the net twice on Saturday at Huddersfield Town, even with ten men. But, by conceding fourteen times at the other end, they have the worst defensive record of any side in the top half of the third tier, which is currently proving to be their Achilles heel. Salford have also scored seventeen times in the league this season, though five sides in the fourth tier have netted more goals than that. And like their opponents tomorrow, the Ammies have leaked plenty at the back, with their fifteen against the highest tally inside the top seven. Expect goals to be plentiful at both ends of the pitch in this midweek Vertu Trophy clash.
Third Prediction For Salford City vs Stockport County: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 8/15
While the Ammies failed to net on Saturday, in their last five league games, they have managed to get on the scoresheet, but were also susceptible at the other end. Only twice in Stockport’s eleven games this term have both teams failed to find the scoresheet, with the Hatters managing to score in thirteen of their fourteen games across all competitions. In the first meeting in 2022, there have been only seven games between the two clubs, with Salford’s sole win coming in the 1st Leg of the Play-Off tie, which Stockport went on to win. The Hatters have won three times, with the remaining three games ending in draws. With an average of 2.3 goals across those games, expect the tally to be evenly split tomorrow evening.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Salford City have eyes on a first season in League One after a couple of near misses in recent years. The Ammies narrowly missed out on the top seven last season, and were defeated in the Play-Offs on penalties by Stockport two years ago. While remaining inside the top seven at present, two successive losses against fellow promotion hopefuls have put a damper on an otherwise impressive start to the season. It didn’t start in the best manner, losing against Crewe Alexandra, but a quick response was provided against Notts County. After taking League One Rotherham United to penalties in the Carabao Cup, before narrowly exiting the competition on spot-kicks, they returned to league action with another three points. That theme continued against Newport County, before current fourth-tier leaders Walsall edged past the Ammies in the West Midlands.
Friday night football against Salford City saw Karl Robinson’s outfit require a 93rd-minute header from Kadeem Harris to salvage a point against basement side Cheltenham Town. In September, three successive league victories over Tranmere Rovers, Shrewsbury Town and Swindon Town saw them move into the automatic promotion places in League Two. While the first two sides have been battling at the wrong end of the table, the Robins are fighting with Salford for promotion, so this was seen as a statement victory. But Bristol Rovers spoiled their perfect record last month with a narrow win, though Luke Garbutt missed a stoppage-time penalty in a disappointing trip to the South West. On Saturday, the Ammies were defeated by Grimsby Town, with fellow promotion contenders Chesterfield and Gillingham still to come on the road later this month. Inbetween that, a clash with Greater Manchester rivals Oldham Athletic will see the Sky TV cameras at the Peninsula Stadium.
Stockport are continuing to fire and find the sort of form which had them heavily fancied to challenge for promotion at the start of the campaign. Those calls only grew with an excellent opening weekend victory over Bolton Wanderers, before edging past another side who were beaten in the Play-Offs last term: Wycombe Wanderers. Overcoming Cheshire rivals Crewe Alexandra in the Carabao Cup made it three wins from three in all competitions, before a repeat of the Leyton Orient Play-Off Semi-Final ended in the same scoreline at Brisbane Road as the first leg did. A late equaliser from the O’s saw them nick a point, having been two down, before Bradford City inflicted a first league loss on Dave Challinor’s outfit. To further rub salt into the wounds, ex-Hatter Antoni Sarcevic grabbed the winner against his former side. A quick response was provided against Burton Albion, having to fight from a goal down with ten men after Brad Hills was dismissed after half an hour.
Two games in four days against Wigan saw the Latics eliminate them from the League Cup, before a stalemate in the league in Greater Manchester. Stockport’s indifferent run continued at Plymouth Argyle, with a disappointing afternoon after conceding four, despite scoring in injury time in both halves. Five points from nine to end September could so easily have been seven, after high-flying Cardiff City netted in the seventh minute of stoppage time to steal a point. The Hatters returned to winning ways against Rotherham United, before being held at home again against Reading. Despite having ten men at Huddersfield Town on Saturday, Stockport managed a statement victory against the Terriers. Two home games are quickly around the corner against struggling Blackpool and Exeter City, before a nine-day wait for their final game of October against Port Vale.
