Our Three Predictions For Rotherham United vs Oldham Athletic

  • Prediction 1 – Martin Sherif To Score – TBC
  • Prediction 2 – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 4/6
  • Prediction 3 – Rotherham United To Win – 17/20

First Prediction For Rotherham United vs Oldham Athletic – Martin Sherif To Score – TBC

The EFL Trophy usually means heavy rotation which may hand on-loan youngster Martin Sherif another chance at a start. Kion Etete was given the nod to play by Matt Hamshaw against Bradford City, but Sherif was brought on at half-time and got the Millers’ second. Jordan Hughill may also get a chance in this game with Sam Nombe and Josh Kayode injured, but Sherif is likely to get some game time. With two goals in League One this season on top of his strong record last season’s Premier League 2 competition, the Dutch forward is a good choice for a likely goalscorer.

Second Prediction For Rotherham United vs Oldham Athletic – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 4/6

The EFL Trophy usually brings high-scoring matches and with Rotherham not playing at their best defensively, there could be a fair few chances for goals in both directions. The Millers have conceded 15 goals in League One so far this season, and have struggled for results in League One, while Oldham have had a more incosistent start and a stronger defensive record with just nine let in. The Latics were dismantled by Manchester City’s academy side in the first group game, and with plenty of rotation from both sides that lack of cohesion could see a few goals under the lights.

Third Prediction For Rotherham United vs Oldham Athletic – Rotherham United To Win – 17/20

Their advantage at home and in division could see Rotherham claim three points in this game. United had a great 50 minutes against previous league leaders Bradford and while they capitulated against their Yorkshire rivals there were positives to take from that clash. Oldham have begun to drift back into mediocrity after three great wins in a row in the fourth tier, but will still feel confident in claiming a win in this. Both teams have a great chance to claim victory and while it is hard to predict these cup games, the League One side should have the players to keep their EFL Trophy campaign alive.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head

Rotherham United have an advantage of an extra two day’s rest on Oldham heading into this game, with their Yorkshire derby matchup against Bradford being brought forward to Thursday night for television broadcast. Despite a good night going forward with Martin Sherif and Denzel Hall putting the Millers in front, more defensive issues allowed the Bantams to come back to claim a point at home. In the Trophy, they were beaten in their first match, losing 1-0 to fellow League One outfit Bolton Wanderers, putting them third and on the brink of elimination in this match. They enter this match without a win in four games, losing the three matches prior to the Bradford result.

Oldham Athletic have had their boosters cooled after a great end to September, with three wins out of four matches, including solid wins over Bromley and Cambridge United. However, they were convincingly beaten away at Notts County at the weekend, leaving them in 15th place after 11 matches of their League Two season. Their EFL Trophy opener was a much more dire performance, being dismantled handily by the Manchester City academy side, with the young Cityzens winning 5-1 at Boundary Park, Luke Hannant being the only one to score for Michael Mellon’s team.

These teams have played each other four times since 2010, coming in two League One seasons in 2013-2014 and 2017-2018. Rotherham are unbeaten across those games, with three wins and a draw to their name.  Oldham last beat the Millers in South Yorkshire, doing the league double over them in the 2007-07 League One season.
