Stevenage manager Alex Revell has received high praise from Luton Town boss Matt Bloomfield ahead of the two side’s meeting this afternoon.
The 42-year-old is in his second stint as manager at the Lamex Stadium, having initially held the role between 2020 and 2021. He returned to the club a few months later in a coaching role before replacing Steve Evans at the helm in April 2024 after his predecessor departed for Rotherham United.
His first full season in charge saw him defy the odds by achieving a 14th placed finish in League One, but he has taken it to another level this term. The Hertfordshire-based club currently sit second in the table and have a chance to replace Bradford City at the top tomorrow afternoon.
Bloomfield Lauds Revell
Matt Bloomfield takes his Luton side to Stevenage tomorrow hoping to move into the play-off places. However, he knows he is in for a tough afternoon and has piled the praise on his former teammate. Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio, the ex-Wycombe Wanderers boss said:
“Stevenage are very organised, they work incredibly hard. Revs has had real good consistency among their group, coupled with good recruitment over the summer – I’m not surprised how they’ve started at all.
“Revs is someone I think incredibly highly of. We shared a dressing room together at Wycombe for a little while. I wanted it to be longer but he moved on to Leyton Orient.
“He had a tough first spell as manager at Stevenage but he went away to coach for a bit and come back; he’s done an incredible job. They’ve stuck with their guy and he’s come through the other side and is getting the rewards for it.
“We see the game and people (in a) similar way, the morals and values we stand by, we’re very similar in that regard.”
Writer’s View
It’s been an incredible start to the season for Stevenage. They sit two points behind leaders Bradford, who have played two games more. With seven wins from their opening nine, Boro have a chance to move to the top of the table tomorrow. It will be a tough task against a team that were playing Premier League football just 17 months ago, but the Hatters have hardly set the world alight in League One. Alex Revell’s side are the slight favourites to pick up another three points and due to postponements for the international break, put themselves in pole position for promotion for at least two weeks.
