Former Wrexham star Steven Fletcher has today announced his retirement from football following his release from the Championship club this summer.
The 38-year-old has played over 650 career games, including multiple caps for his native Scotland.
A Proper Number Nine
Fletcher began his professional career at Hibernian, where his clinical finishing produced 43 goals in 156 Scottish Premier League matches. His standout performances earned a £3 million transfer to Burnley in 2009, marking his debut in the Premier League.
At Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fletcher’s 23 goals were instrumental in securing promotion, showcasing his aerial prowess and clinical touch. He later joined Sunderland, scoring 11 goals in his debut season, 2012-13, and went on to amass 53 Premier League goals throughout his career, including impactful spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City in the Championship. Arriving at Dundee United in 2022, Fletcher continued to demonstrate his goalscoring quality in the later stages of his career.

Time In Hollywood
The veteran striker Steven Fletcher joined Wrexham in 2023, bringing Premier League pedigree to the Hollywood-backed club in League Two. In his debut season, the 36-year-old netted eight goals across 33 appearances, including a historic EFL hat-trick on his 400th league outing against Morecambe, propelling the Reds to automatic promotion as runners-up.
The following year in League One, Fletcher’s efficiency shone, scoring eight goals in limited minutes, only mounting five in just 500, while making key starts in 40 total outings. His aerial dominance and poise were pivotal in helping the club secure back-to-back promotions, elevating Wrexham to the Championship and cementing his status as a club legend.
Fletchers Farewell
Speaking on his Instagram account, Fletcher said
“After a lot of thought, I feel the time is right to retire from football. It’s not an easy decision because this game has been my life since I was a boy, but I know in my heart it’s the right moment to close this chapter.”
“From starting out at Hibs to the journeys with Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland, Marseille, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke, Dundee United and finishing at Wrexham every club has shaped me and given me memories I’ll never forget.”
“Pulling on the Scotland shirt was also one of the greatest honours of my career.”
“I owe so much to all my managers and coaches, who taught me lessons not just about football but about life, and to every team-mate I’ve shared a dressing room with I’ve been lucky to call so many of you friends.”
“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who has been part of my journey.”
Fletch! ❤️
