Former Swindon Town Defender Seals European Switch

Former Swindon Town defender Taylor Curran has completed a move to Portuguese side FC Ferreiras, stepping from English non-league into the Campeonato de Portugal.

The 25-year-old’s arrival was confirmed by the Algarve club on 24 September after he left Brentwood Town in the summer to pursue an overseas opportunity in Albufeira.

From County Ground prospect to a new start in the Algarve

Curran spent three seasons on the books at Swindon Town between 2019 and 2021, making 19 first-team appearances. He initially joined from Southend United during Richie Wellens’ tenure, featuring primarily as a substitute in League One before three league starts under John Sheridan in a difficult campaign that ended in relegation to League Two.

His sole Swindon goal came as a substitute against Oxford United, a derby strike that narrowed the deficit but could not rescue a result.

After departing the County Ground, Curran remained in the English pyramid, taking in spells with Maidstone United, Haringey Borough, Welling United and Cheshunt. He then settled at Brentwood Town last season, registering 19 appearances as the Essex side pushed at the right end of the Isthmian League Division One North.

In July it was confirmed he would leave Brentwood to explore an opportunity abroad, paving the way for the Ferreiras move.

Why Ferreiras and what awaits in Portugal

Ferreiras compete in the Campeonato de Portugal, the national fourth tier that bridges the gap between regionalised football and the fully professional ranks. Based in the Algarve, the club offers a different rhythm of football and a pathway that has tempted a growing number of British players seeking regular senior minutes, such as Tashan Oakley-Booth and Midi Shodipo.

For Curran, the switch presents a reset and a platform. The versatile defender operates comfortably across the back line and arrives with experience of senior dressing rooms in both the EFL and non-league.

With Ferreiras looking to consolidate and climb, his adaptability and exposure to high-pressure fixtures in England should be valuable attributes as he beds into a new league and culture.

Writer’s View

This is a smart, lateral step for Curran. Regular football in the Campeonato de Portugal, away from the churn of short-term English deals, may offer stability and a clearer runway for improvement. If he turns minutes into form, the move can either open doors higher up the Portuguese ladder or provide a springboard back to the UK with a stronger résumé.

For Ferreiras, it is a low-risk addition of a defender with a sound grounding in the English game and room to grow.
