Cheltenham Town Consider New Managerial Option

Cheltenham Town managerial prospect Steve Cotterill may have competition for the vacancy at Whaddon Road as a new name has emerged in the contest.

The Robins are on the lookout for a new boss after Michael Flynn was given the boot after losing 3-0 to Oldham Athletic at the weekend, capping off a brutal start of the season which see Town sit bottom of League Two after nine matches. Gloucestershire Live reporter Jon Palmer has stated that a new appointment would be made “swiftly”, and in his most recent report revealed that owner Mike Garlick would interview candidates before the weekend.

Hinshelwood In Contention

The perceived frontrunner to take over Cheltenham is Steve Cotterill, having been out of work since his contract at Forest Green Rovers was terminated in June. It would be a return 23 years in the making for the former Bristol City boss, who managed Town between 1997 and 2002 and guided the club into the EFL for their first time in their history in addition to an EFL Trophy win and promotion to League One before joining Stoke City.

However, a new report from Graeme Bailey in EFL Analysis has touted a new name, which could take over the Robins in Adam Hinshelwood, who is also out of work. The 41-year-old left York City after four matches this season, following a successful season with the Minstermen, which saw them finish second in the National League but fell short of promotion to the EFL at the hands of eventual playoff winners Oldham.

Hinshelwood is yet to manage in the Football League, having previously taken charge of Worthing and Hastings United, but if he is to be chosen as the next manager of Cheltenham Town, he would not take charge of their weekend game against Grimsby Town, with Aaron Downes and Ashley Vincent expected to take interim charge.

Writers’ View

The emergence of Adam Hinshelwood’s name in the conversations around the Cheltenham Town vacancy is somewhat expected. He was the standout manager in the National League last season with his work at York, and were seemingly favourites to win the playoffs before being well beaten by Oldham Athletic. However, Steve Cotterill remains the best option with his work at the club previously and the need for a unifying figure at a time when their survival in League Two is at stake.
