Grimsby Town have announced the departure of left-back Matty Carson after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
The 22-year-old exits Blundell Park little more than a year after joining the Mariners from Reading, bringing an end to a brief stay in Lincolnshire.
Carson’s Time with the Mariners
Carson arrived at Grimsby in June 2024 on a two-year deal following his release from Reading. During his spell with the Mariners, he featured 13 times in all competitions, while also spending part of last season out on loan at Alfreton Town and Radcliffe in the National League North.
Known for his energy on the left flank and his ability from set-pieces, Carson was initially seen as a player who could bring balance to the side. However, opportunities were limited, with head coach David Artell preferring other options as he reshaped his squad for the current campaign.
The club confirmed his departure with a short statement, offering thanks and best wishes for his future career.
“Matty leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Grimsby Town and we wish him well for the future.”

A Career of Many Stops
Carson’s exit from Grimsby marks another step in a varied career to date. The Chester-born defender began in Liverpool’s academy before moving to Burnley as a teenager. After spells with Accrington Stanley, Carrick Rangers and Stalybridge Celtic, he signed for Reading in 2023, making 17 appearances across league and cup before leaving for Blundell Park.
His time with the Mariners offered flashes of his attacking instincts, particularly during loan spells where he gained regular minutes. Despite this, Grimsby opted to part ways, allowing Carson to seek a new opportunity elsewhere.
Writer’s View
Carson’s release underlines the reality of squad turnover at this level. Grimsby are in the process of restructuring under Artell, and with limited opportunities for the defender, the mutual decision allows both parties to move on.
For Carson, his experience across multiple clubs at just 22 shows resilience, and his set-piece ability could still make him an asset further down the pyramid. For the Mariners, the departure trims the squad and opens the door for reinforcements better suited to Artell’s plans.
