In a compilation of views on BBC Sports “Your views” page, Newport County fans have shown clear distaste for under-pressure manager Dave Hughes.
This was further enhanced after their EFL Trophy loss to Arsenal under-21’s yesterday evening.
A Slow Start
Newport County’s campaign started promisingly, with a Carabao Cup win over Barnet and four points from their first two league games. However, their form has since faltered hugely, losing six of their last seven matches, leaving them just above the relegation zone on goal difference, level on points with Shrewsbury Town. Newport will be desperate to avoid relegation, especially after flirting with the bottom of the table for multiple seasons. Manager David Hughes, despite a huge squad turnover is now under huge pressure to reverse this slide.

Underhelming Appointment
David Hughes was seen as an unusual appointment for the League Two side. At 47, the Wrexham-born coach, appointed in May on a two-year deal, stepped into his first senior management role after an inpressive career in youth coaching. Previously Manchester United’s Under-21s coach, Hughes shaped talents at Cardiff and Southampton academies whilst also leading Wales Under-17s. A former defender, his playing career ended prematurely at 26 due to injury. Taking over a Newport side long gravitating towards League Two’s relegation zone, Hughes’s lack of senior managerial experience makes him a stark, unconventional choice. With just two wins in 11 games, his calm approach faces scrutiny from the County faitfhul as he continues to battle to steer Newport, away from another relegation fight.
Fans Frustrations
Many fans expressed similar frustrations at Hughes:
Mathew: Woeful summer recruitment, coupled with an alarming lack of experience and tone deaf statements from the owner, means Hughes has been hung out to dry. Relegation beckons.
Russell: Action is needed NOW. Replace Hughes with (Mike) Flynn asap.
Carl: I listened and watched the manager’s comments after the Gillingham game, and he did not fill me with great thoughts/confidence going forward. We are already in the whirlpool, struggling to keep our heads above the water before the inevitable takes hold, I’m sorry to say.

Newport County’s dire situation is evident. Struck by one of League Two’s tightest budgets, they’re flirting with a National League return, unseen since their financial implosion in 1988 which axed status in the Football League. Fans’ mounting frustration feels mostly justified, with manager David Hughes conjuring just two wins in 11 matches. Without a sight of momentum, the growing angst among supporters is that relegation is unavoidable and could become reality, unraveling their clubs past hard to work to reach the Football League once again.
