Former Ipswich Town Captain’s Deal SUDDENLY AXED

Former Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy has reportedly had his contract terminated by Kuwaiti Premier League side Kuwait SC after only two months.

The 34-year-old arrived in Kuwait after four years at Ipswich Town, where he helped the Tractor Boys return to the Premier League.

The Lucrative Move

Sam Morsy’s career began at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ youth academy. He then made a move to Port Vale in 2008, before turning pro in 2010. At Port Vale, Morsy debuted in February 2010. Playing his part to help the club secure League Two promotion in 2012–13. The following season, Morsy joined Chesterfield, helping the Spirerites to win the League Two title that year.

Morsy later arrived at Ipswich Town in August 2021, becoming captain a year later. His composure and leadership helped drive the Tractor Boys League One promotion in 2022–23. In the following season in the Championship, Morsy’s leadership helped secure a back-to-back promotion to the Premier League via play-offs.

In July, Morsy signed a lucrative two-year deal with Kuwait SC after failed talks at Portman Road. However, being released after only three games, Kuwait SC are reported to have terminated his contract already.

Now a free agent at 34, Morsy’s future is up in the air.

Where Next?

Now a free agent, Sam Morsy faces a hurdle: FIFA and EFL rules now bar him from registering to play for an English club until January. Should a return materialise, despite perhaps wanting a return to England, Morsy may want to find a club as quickly as possible to get fit, ready for next year’s World Cup. Due to the closed transfer window and squad limits, this limbo could push him toward interim moves abroad.

At 34, Morsy’s nine Egypt caps and leadership could draw many suitors. The Saudi Pro League could offer lucrative deals, with Morsy perhaps wanting to stay closer to Kuwait.

Egypt’s Premier League may be the biggest possibility, boosting his availability and ease for World Cup qualifiers. EFL sides will of course, value his promotion pedigree but he may be a risk in January

At 34, Morsy’s abrupt exit leaves him at a crossroads. Unable to sign with an English club until January due to transfer rules, he will no doubt be weighing up options to stay sharp for Egypt’s World Cup qualifiers. A short-term move abroad, perhaps staying around the Middle East, could offer high wages and minutes in the tank, but risks disrupting his rhythm. Staying in Europe might better align with his physical, box-to-box style. Any EFL return would be a coup, with his leadership being invaluable.
