Bolton Wanderers Head Coach Targets Further Improvements

Bolton Wanderers head coach Steven Schumacher insists there is more to come from his team after their thumping 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The Trotters have tasted defeat just once this season, with that coming on the opening day against Stockport County. Despite that, they have become somewhat draw specialists, with five of their last seven league games finishing 1-1.

September has started well for Schumacher’s team though. Two victories from their last three outings have seen them move up to 10th and just two points outside the play-off places.

Schumacher Pleased But Wants More

Bolton are still considered one of the favourites to push for promotion this season and their emphatic performance against rivals Wigan seems to have enhanced that. Despite that, Schumacher still saw negatives in the performance. Speaking to official club media, he said:

“We were clinical on Saturday, but I still think there is more to come from us.

“The opportunities that we got and the finishes in the first half were excellent. We had two or three other big moments in the first half where we got in and the keeper just smothered it or it didn’t quite work for us, but we were definitely threatening in the first 45 minutes – and we killed the game off with our first chance of the second half.

“I would have liked to have had a little bit more control. After that fourth goal, it got a little bit scrappy for a few minutes and Wigan got themselves a nice goal. But we came back into it late on and controlled the game again, so there are still things to improve on but it was a good performance and a good three points.”

Wanderers return to action tonight when they host Manchester City under-21s in the EFL Trophy. A trip to Northampton Town follows on Saturday as they look to record back-to-back League One wins.

Writer’s View

Despite losing just once all season, it’s fair to say it’s been a slow start for Bolton. They have drawn five games but have had to rely on late equalisers in three of those. That shows their resilience but things have now started to improve, especially at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Wins over AFC Wimbledon and Wigan were impressive but they are still to pick up maximum points away from home. This is something that Schumacher will be looking to change on Saturday.
