Luton Town Boss Addresses Sack Calls

Luton Town manager Matt Bloomfield insists he will use calls from supporters for him to be sacked as ‘fuel to put things right’.

The Hatters found themselves in League One this season after suffering back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and the Championship. Armed with the riches that come with parachute payments, they were expected to challenge for the title but currently sit 11th after eight games played.

Bloomfield took his team to Lincoln City on Saturday hoping to bounce back from a 3-2 defeat against Plymouth Argyle at Kenilworth Road. However, they were largely outclassed by one of the in-form teams in the division and succumbed to a 3-1 loss.

It was a result which piled the pressure on the former Wycombe Wanderers boss, who has now overseen three league reverses in their last four.

Bloomfield Remains Optimistic

Luton host Doncaster Rovers on Saturday and will be looking to turn their recent poor fortunes around. Bloomfield will know that more dropped points will see supporter anger increase, but he insists that he is still the right man for the job. Speaking to the media, he said:

“Listen, I don’t think I could be any more determined, but it’s fuel, it’s absolutely fuel. I have a high desire, a huge desire to put everything right, to get more points on the board, to have our team playing the way we all believe they can.

“We’re in a tough moment right now, but the only way you get out of these tough moments is to stick together, keep working hard and come out the other side stronger. I have a huge pride in my work, in our work as a group, and of course it hurts. I’m human, football managers are human, it comes with leading a life in this job, resilience. You have to build your resilience and you have to dig deep and you have to keep working and believe in what you’re doing. I believe in what we’re doing and we have to find ways to make that come out stronger.

“I think this is the first performance this season, Bradford away wasn’t good enough, today wasn’t good enough, this is the first time in a little while I’ve had to stand here and give my honesty. The last two home games we’ve got beat, but we’ve had 43 shots of which 37 were in our opposition’s box. We need to take those moments more, but today there’s no excuse, it wasn’t good enough and we have to be better.”

Writer’s View

There’s no hiding from the fact that Luton’s recent form has been disappointing or that they were completely outclassed by Lincoln at the weekend. However, there is ample time to turn their fortunes around. They have played a game less than the majority of teams above them and if they win that, they’ll be just outside the play-off places. Bloomfield needs to pick up points prior to that though to keep them within touching distance. Failure to do that and he’ll be out of a job.
