Colchester United Blow As Midfielder Ben Perry Ruled Out For The Season

Colchester United have suffered a major setback with midfielder Ben Perry ruled out for the rest of the season after a serious knee injury.

The 20-year-old summer signing faces surgery after rupturing two key ligaments during last month’s victory over Shrewsbury Town.

Perry Faces Lengthy Spell On Sidelines

Perry, who joined the U’s from Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the summer, sustained the injury in the first half of the League Two clash at the Greenhous Meadow on 16 August. The midfielder had made four appearances for Colchester before suffering damage to his medial collateral ligament (MCL), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and a minor fracture to the femur.

Head coach Danny Cowley confirmed that after medical advice, the decision has been made for Perry to undergo surgery only on the cruciate ligament. The MCL will be left to heal naturally over the coming weeks before an operation takes place.

“We’re taking a little bit of time with the surgery, because it was a full rupture of the medial ligament and he ruptured his cruciate ligament,” Cowley explained. “There was also a small fracture on the femur, so it was a bad one.

“Sometimes when you rupture the ligaments, the bones clash together which we don’t have to worry too much about, because that will heal in the time that the cruciate takes to heal.”

Cowley added that two routes had been discussed, but the surgeon’s preference was to allow the medial ligament to recover naturally before repairing the cruciate. The expectation is that surgery will take place before the end of the month.

The injury comes as a blow to Colchester, who had seen Perry emerge as a promising addition following his arrival from Forest. The youngster, who has previously spent time on loan at Northampton Town, had impressed with his energy in midfield before being forced off against Shrewsbury.

With Perry sidelined for the rest of the campaign, the U’s will now have to rely on depth within the squad, with players such as Tom Smith already being called into action to cover the absence.

Writer’s View

Perry’s injury represents a significant setback not only for Colchester but also for the player’s own development after making the step from Premier League football into the EFL. At just 20 years old, the midfielder has time on his side, but missing an entire season could stall momentum at a key stage in his career.

For Cowley, the task will be to reshuffle his midfield options and ensure the squad adapts without one of their summer recruits. The hope for both club and player is that Perry returns stronger in 2026, with the potential still clear for him to be a long-term asset once he completes his recovery.
