Luton Town defender Tom Holmes has been ruled out for around two months after picking up an injury on his Rotherham United debut.
The centre-back impressed in Saturday’s victory over Exeter City but has now been sidelined with a ligament problem that cuts short his bright start at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.
The 25-year-old only joined the Millers on deadline day and produced a man-of-the-match display on his first outing, helping Matt Hamshaw’s side to a 1-0 win. However, a scan revealed a partial tear to the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee, a setback that leaves Holmes “devastated” after previously battling fitness issues during his spell at Kenilworth Road.
Hamshaw provides update after cruel setback
Holmes had been upbeat after Saturday’s match, even collecting his man-of-the-match award without complaint. But the defender reported discomfort the following morning, and medical checks confirmed the extent of the damage. Hamshaw admitted the blow was difficult for both player and club.
“It’s the outside of his knee. He’s done his LCL. It’s not a common injury at all. I spoke to him after the game on Saturday and he was absolutely fine. He said he was enjoying it here and loving the environment. Then on Sunday he woke up struggling to walk.
“We got him in for a scan and then got the news. I spoke to the lad this morning and he’s devastated. He feels like he’s let everyone down, which he absolutely hasn’t. Hopefully, Thomas will be back in around eight weeks.”
Holmes joined Luton from Reading in January 2024 but struggled to establish himself due to repeated injuries, making just 22 appearances in 18 months. The loan to Rotherham was seen as an opportunity to gain consistent minutes in League One and rebuild confidence, but that progress has now been stalled.
Rotherham, already managing several injuries, will feel the loss of their new recruit, particularly given how quickly he made an impact in his debut outing. For Holmes, the challenge will be returning to full fitness once again, with both parent club and loan side monitoring his recovery closely.

Writer’s View
This is a harsh twist for Holmes, who appeared to have found the ideal platform at Rotherham after a frustrating spell at Luton. His dominant display against Exeter hinted at the qualities that made him a valuable addition, and Hamshaw’s praise underlines his immediate influence.
The timing of the injury could not be worse for the Millers, who are already stretched, but if Holmes can return in the suggested timeframe, his presence could still be pivotal in the second half of the campaign. For the player, the priority is recovery and ensuring this setback does not derail a career that has repeatedly been interrupted by misfortune.
