Bradford City defender Lewis Richards has stepped up his recovery with an appearance in a private match arranged by Graham Alexander.
The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines but was given valuable minutes alongside several teammates needing game time.
Richards Continues Injury Comeback
Richards, who signed a one-year deal with the Bantams in the summer, has yet to feature competitively this season due to a combination of shoulder and hamstring setbacks. Manager Alexander confirmed the club were taking a cautious approach to his return, ensuring he builds fitness without suffering another relapse.
“He’s training with us every day,” said the City boss. “We’re just making sure with Lewis because he’s had a couple of knockbacks over the last few months. We don’t want him to have another one. If we can get him up to speed at a slightly slower rate, I hope it will be a permanent one when he comes back.”
The bounce game also saw leading scorer Andy Cook and loan signing Tom McIntyre involved, giving fringe players a chance to sharpen up during a rare free midweek.

Mixed Injury News for the Bantams
Bradford are still waiting for clarity on Curtis Tilt after the defender underwent a scan on the hip and groin problem that forced him off during Saturday’s draw at Doncaster Rovers. Alexander explained that the injury was sustained in a collision and that the club are hopeful of a positive outcome once results are confirmed.
There was better news with Matt Pennington returning to full training, while Neill Byrne has also rejoined the group, although the latter remains behind in his recovery after a longer absence. Pennington could be considered for this weekend’s derby against Huddersfield Town, giving Alexander additional defensive options alongside Ciaran Kelly and McIntyre.
The manager admitted competition for places at the back is increasing, something he believes will be essential as the fixtures continue to come thick and fast.
Writer’s View
Bradford supporters will be encouraged by Richards’ progress, with his ability to play across the defensive line making him a useful option once fully fit. Injuries have been a recurring theme for the youngster, but easing him back through controlled minutes appears to be the right strategy.
The uncertainty over Tilt is a concern, though the imminent return of Pennington should soften the blow. With a derby looming, Alexander’s squad depth in defence is starting to look healthier at just the right time.
