Kevin Nolan Makes Bold Northampton Town Claim After Striker Miss

Northampton Town manager Kevin Nolan has dismissed concerns over squad depth after the transfer window closed without the addition of a new striker.

The Cobblers were active throughout the summer, bringing in 16 players, including deadline-day arrivals Kyle Edwards and Theo Avery, but a deal for a number nine failed to materialise before Monday’s cut-off.

Nolan Confident in His Squad

Supporters had hoped for more firepower to complement the attack, yet Nolan is adamant his side are well stocked. He pointed to the options already at Sixfields, stressing that recent injuries clearing up will further strengthen his hand. The manager believes the group assembled is more than capable of competing in League One.

“I’m delighted with the squad we’ve put together this summer,” Nolan said. “We’re in a good place, we have people coming back from injury and we’re looking strong. I think we can double up in every position and that’s always a good sign.”

The former West Ham and Newcastle midfielder added that recent results have boosted morale, with back-to-back victories providing belief in the dressing room. He praised the mentality of his players and emphasised the importance of building momentum as the season progresses.

While he acknowledged the search for a striker fell short, Nolan argued that he already has players who can step up. Ethan Wheatley and Tom Eaves are natural options through the middle, while Elliott List and talisman Sam Hoskins are also capable of leading the line. The addition of Edwards, plus the impending returns of Kamarai Swyer and Michael Jacobs, provide further depth across the forward positions.

“I feel I’m stacked with quality, especially now we’ve added Kyle,” he said. “I’m able to look at the bench and feel I can change the front three and have a different dynamic at any stage of the game so I’m very pleased.”

With the transfer window now closed, Nolan’s attention turns fully to maximising the talent at his disposal. He has made clear his belief that the squad can rise to the demands of League One, provided standards remain high in both training and matches.

Writer’s View

Nolan’s upbeat assessment should reassure Northampton fans concerned by the lack of a new striker. The manager is right to highlight the range of attacking options already at Sixfields, with Hoskins and Eaves offering proven ability and Edwards set to add creativity from wide.

The Cobblers may not have landed a headline centre-forward, but squad depth and versatility across the front line look much improved. If the injury list continues to shorten, Nolan’s confidence in his group could be well founded as Town aim to consolidate their League One status.
