Leicester City Fail In Bid For Hermansen Replacement

Leicester City will not sign German goalkeeper Jonas Omlin after reports suggested a potential deal has collapsed.

The Foxes were in the market for a replacement for their outgoing Mads Hermansen, who was signed by West Ham United earlier this window. Jakub Stolarczyk has stepped up to become Marti Cifuentues’ first-choice keeper in the East Midlands, but that did not deter the Spaniard from looking for alternative options in the transfer market.

Omlin Chase Ends

One potential signing was Borussia Monchengladbach’s Jonas Omlin, who was the subject of a bid by City last week for a season-long loan deal. The Foals wanted a buy clause inserted into any possible deal for the Swiss international, and would be allowed to leave the Bundesliga side once a replacement was found.

Omlin has spent two seasons at Gladbach and made 36 appearances for the side across three seasons. He is yet to feature this campaign, with Moritz Nicolas the preferred option in net for the Rhineland side. However, German transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg has since revealed that any potential deal for the 31-year-old to join Leicester has collapsed, and Omlin will remain in Monchengladbach.

City have already recruited a new substitute goalkeeper in veteran Asmir Begovic, who reunited with his former boss at Queens Park Rangers in Cifuentes. Stolarczyk has played all of Leicester’s five games so far this season in both league and cup.

Writers’ View

The chance to sign Jonas Omlin has fallen apart for Leicester City and it will be interesting to see if they will re-enter the market so late on in the window for a new option. Jakub Stolarczyk is certainly capable enough of being the first-choice goalkeeper for the Foxes so perhaps that will settle whatever decision the transfer committee at the King Power will make. Incomings is the name of the game today for the Foxes amid Bilal El Khannouss’ expected exit with as many as three players tipped to be arriving today, including a loan move for Burnley’s Aaron Ramsey.
