Coventry City Boss Makes Striker Exit Admission

Coventry City striker Norman Bassette is on the verge of a loan switch to Reims, with Frank Lampard admitting a move is “possible” after the forward attended their match against Le Mans.

Reports in France and from Coventry suggest a medical was scheduled following the fixture, although the Sky Blues boss stressed the deal is not yet complete.

Lampard confirms discussions, medical reported

Asked post-match whether talk of a loan was accurate, Frank Lampard said,

“It’s possible that Norman goes on loan. It’s not done yet, so that’s it.”

The 20-year-old was pictured at Reims’ game against Le Mans, with multiple outlets indicating a medical was planned immediately afterwards as the French club, currently competing in Ligue 2, push to finalise the deal. The move would mark Bassette’s return to French football after a year in England.

Bassette joined Coventry in August 2024 from Caen on a four-year contract and featured regularly last season, making 25 Championship appearances. A Belgium youth international now capped at senior level, Bassette offers pace and penalty-box movement, but competition for places has intensified in Lampard’s squad.

With the window entering its final days, City’s stance has been that fringe attackers could depart on temporary deals if it helps balance the group while recruitment priorities are addressed elsewhere.

Why this loan suits all parties

For Coventry, a loan would free minutes and wages while preserving a long-term asset who remains under contract. Bassette would benefit from consistent starts in France, where his profile is well known following spells with Caen and Mechelen. Reims, a historically significant club in French football, are targeting promotion and require depth at centre forward, making Bassette an attractive, development-friendly addition.

The key outstanding point is timing. Coventry still have business to conduct before Monday night’s deadline, and any exit must be sequenced against incoming priorities. Lampard has been clear in recent briefings that attacking productivity has improved, but competition and balance across the frontline remain under review. Should the medical be completed and terms agreed, the expectation is that the loan would run for the season, giving Bassette a defined platform while Coventry monitor his progress.

Writer’s View

This feels like smart list management. Bassette’s ceiling is evident, yet his path to starts has narrowed under Lampard. A season leading the line for Reims, in a physically demanding second tier, could sharpen his decision-making and penalty-area timing. Coventry would retain control and, crucially, a more seasoned forward could return next summer.

The only caution is depth: sanctioning another attacking exit increases the pressure to land at least one front-end reinforcement before the deadline. If City can execute both sides, this is tidy business that protects the present and invests in the future.
