Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Barnsley have started positively in Conor Hourihane’s first full campaign in charge, winning three of the five League One matches they have played, and the Tykes have also made it to the third round of the Carabao Cup following victories over Fleetwood Town and Rotherham United.
Barnsley faced a tricky trip to Home Park to face Plymouth Argyle on the opening day of the season but dispatched the Pilgrims by three goals to one thanks to an own goal, Adam Phillips and Davis Keillor-Dunn. They followed that up a week later with a dramatic home win against Burton Albion. The Tykes found themselves 2-0 down at half time but began the fightback through Caylan Vickers ten minutes into the second half before Davis Keillor-Dunn equalised just after the hour. The evergreen David McGoldrick struck in the 93rd minute to ensure a second straight victory.
A home draw with ten men against Bolton Wanderers followed, with McGoldrick again on target for the Oakwell side before Caylan Vickers got the only goal of the game at Peterborough United to secure a 1-0 win. Hourihane’s men would finally come unstuck against AFC Wimbledon, going down 2-0 at The Cherry Red Records Stadium.
Barnsley’s league games have produced 14 goals so far this season, the Tykes scoring eight and conceding six. Luca Connell and goalkeeper Murphy Cooper have made impressive starts to the campaign while Caylan Vickers, David McGoldrick and Davis Keillor-Dunn have scored two goals each and Adam Phillips has provided two assists.
Huddersfield Town have also started well under their new boss, Lee Grant. The former goalkeeper is at the very start of his managerial career having been appointed in the summer and has overseen a positive start following the Terriers disappointing introduction to League One last season.
Town opened up with a comprehensive 3-0 home win against last season’s losing playoff finalists Leyton Orient thanks to Joseph Low, Alfie May and Ruben Roosken before a victory on the road at Reading through late goals from Jack Whatmough and Cameron Ashia.
An impressive penalty shootout win against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup was the next result in Grant’s superb start to management but he had his first taste of defeat when his Terriers couldn’t force the win against a ten man Blackpool side despite Ben Wiles opening the scoring inside five minutes.
Wiles and a Joe Taylor penalty ensured it was back to winning ways against Doncaster Rovers and Alfie May scored the only goal of the game against Stevenage to hand Huddersfield back-to-back home wins. The superb form continued on Tuesday as they overcame a strong Sunderland lineup on penalties to progress to the Carabao Cup third round and add a Premier League scalp to that of Championship side Leicester.
Huddersfield have scored ten times in their five league matches and have only conceded three goals, keeping four cleans sheets. Ben Wiles and Alfie May have both scored twice while May has added an assist alongside Marcus Harness and Herbie Kane.
Since 2012, these sides have met on 18 occasions and it is Huddersfield who have dominated the contests with ten wins to Barnsley’s five. They met three times last season after being drawn together in the EFL Trophy group stages and it was the Terriers who won all three of the meetings by an aggregate of 6-1.
They had played each other before last season in the 2021-22 season in the Championship, again facing each other three times after being drawn to face each other in the FA Cup fourth round. The season would end with Barnsley bottom of the table, taking just 30 points from their 46 outings. One of those points did come against a Huddersfield side who finished the season in third place. Huddersfield did knock the Tykes out of the FA Cup and beat them 2-1 in the second league meeting of the campaign.
The last time Barnsley were successful in this fixture was back in the 2020-21 season when it was their turn to complete the double over their Yorkshire rivals on the way to a playoff spot of their own. Current Huddersfield midfielder Herbie Kane was in the Barnsley side as two goals from a future Terrier Michal Helik sealed a 2-1 win at Oakwell before a Daryl Dike strike was enough for a victory at the John Smith’s Stadium.
