Marcelino Núñez has completed a dramatic £10m move from Norwich City to bitter rivals Ipswich Town.
The Chilean midfielder has penned a four-year deal at Portman Road, rejecting new terms in Norfolk to join the Tractor Boys in one of the most controversial East Anglian transfers in living memory.
A Stunning Switch Across the Divide
Núñez departs after three seasons at Carrow Road, where he became known for his technical quality and set-piece threat. His last goal for Norwich came in the Old Farm derby, a decisive free-kick that secured a 1-0 win and extended the club’s long unbeaten run over Ipswich. That history now adds fuel to the rivalry as he prepares for his first return to Carrow Road in Ipswich colours.
The deal, worth an initial £7.5m plus £2.5m in achievable add-ons, has split opinion among Norwich supporters. Sporting director Ben Knapper sanctioned the sale in the belief it was a strong financial offer for a player entering the final year of his contract, though many fans see it as a direct strengthening of their fiercest rivals.

Other Players Who Crossed the Rivalry
Núñez is not the first player to make the switch between East Anglia’s two great foes. Over the decades, several names have endured the scrutiny of representing both clubs.
Goalkeeper Andy Marshall made more than 100 appearances for Norwich before moving directly to Ipswich in 2001, a move that brought heavy criticism from both sets of fans. Brandon Williams also tasted the rivalry, spending a season on loan at Norwich before joining Ipswich on loan in 2023/24, where his social media antics further antagonised Canaries supporters.
Midfielder Liam Gibbs grew up in Suffolk and played for Ipswich as a teenager before controversially joining Norwich in 2021. Ben Godfrey also featured briefly for Town on loan before starring for Norwich in their Championship title-winning campaign and later earning a big-money move to Everton.
Other notable names include striker Alan Lee, who scored goals for Ipswich before a short loan at Norwich, and Clive Woods, an FA Cup winner with Town in 1978, who later joined the Canaries. Their careers underline just how rare, and often divisive, these moves across the divide can be.
The move was best summed up by former Canaries striker Darren Huckerby, who claimed last night he’d rather have retired than moved to Ipswich.
Writer’s View
Núñez’s transfer is one of the boldest in East Anglian history, not only because of the financial scale but also the emotional impact. For Ipswich, it represents a major coup ahead of their Championship campaign, adding proven quality and derby pedigree to Kieran McKenna’s squad.
For Norwich, it is a decision that could haunt them should Núñez shine in blue and white. With the derby set for October, this switch guarantees an extra layer of intensity in an already fierce rivalry.
