Derby County have pulled off a major coup in the transfer market with the signing of Scotland international Max Johnston from Sturm Graz.
The 20-year-old right-back has agreed a four-year deal at Pride Park, becoming the Rams’ 12th addition of a busy summer window under head coach John Eustace.
Rams land highly-rated defender
Johnston arrives in England with an impressive pedigree, having enjoyed a successful spell in Austria with Sturm Graz. During his two years there he made 65 appearances, scoring twice and playing a role in back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga title wins in 2024 and 2025, as well as lifting the Austrian Cup in 2024.
The move continues an upward trajectory for a player who came through the Motherwell academy. After loan spells at Queen of the South and Cove Rangers, Johnston broke into the Fir Park first team and was named the SFWA Young Player of the Year in 2022–23. His development quickly attracted attention, leading to his switch abroad before now securing a Championship move.

Player reaction
Johnston expressed his delight at sealing the transfer and highlighted Derby’s stature as a key factor in his decision.
“I’m delighted, obviously I am buzzing to be here and it was a long time coming. I had to wait a little bit and be patient, but I’m delighted that we’ve managed to get it over the line. It was a few weeks ago when I first got the information that Derby were interested.
“As soon as it came about, I was ready to come here. It’s a massive club – when people say Derby County, the first thing I think of is the massive fan base and the history. I’m ready to go.”
His arrival strengthens Eustace’s defensive options, with the Rams looking to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of the Championship this season. The signing also underlines the ambition of the club’s recruitment drive, with Johnston the latest to arrive alongside high-profile captures including Lewis Travis.
Writer’s View
This transfer feels like a statement of intent. Johnston’s combination of domestic success in Scotland, silverware in Austria and a recent senior Scotland debut makes him an outstanding capture for Derby.
He is young, attack-minded, and arrives with experience of winning environments, qualities that should benefit Eustace’s side. For the Rams, who have been ambitious throughout this transfer window, Johnston is a signing that signals they are not just planning for this season but for the long term.
