Stockport County are weighing up a late move for AFC Fylde midfielder Taelor O’Kane as they look to strengthen their promotion push before the transfer window closes.
The 20-year-old has emerged as one of the most highly regarded young players outside the EFL, with County now considering a bid to prise him away from Mill Farm.
Hatters Eye Rising Talent
O’Kane, the son of former Manchester United and Everton defender John O’Kane, has been on the radar of EFL clubs for over a year. Peterborough United saw a £100,000 offer rejected last summer, and Fylde are again braced for interest in their academy graduate. Stockport, who have started their League One campaign strongly under Dave Challinor, are now believed to be weighing up a formal approach.
Having joined Fylde’s youth ranks in 2020, O’Kane progressed rapidly through the system and claimed the Academy Player of the Year award in 2022/23. He made his first-team breakthrough last season, scoring four goals in 19 National League appearances before being loaned to Chester in January. At the Deva Stadium he impressed further, scoring twice in 15 National League North outings and earning plaudits for his work rate and maturity in midfield.
Comfortable as both a box-to-box midfielder and a deeper-lying anchor, O’Kane has built a reputation for his tenacity and ability to cover ground. His combination of energy and discipline has marked him out as a player capable of making the step into the EFL, and with one year remaining on his Fylde contract, County could be tempted to move quickly before his value rises further.
Fylde, meanwhile, face a decision on whether to cash in now or risk losing the youngster for a reduced fee further down the line. The Coasters have already benefited from his development, but the lure of a transfer to League One would represent a significant step in O’Kane’s career trajectory.
For Stockport, who have ambitions of pushing towards the Championship following back-to-back promotions in recent years, the deal would add depth and competition in midfield. Challinor’s side have made a solid start to the campaign, with league wins against Bolton, Wycombe and Burton underlining their credentials. However, the recent EFL Cup exit to Wigan served as a reminder of the need to strengthen further if they are to sustain their momentum across a long season.

Writer’s View
O’Kane looks a shrewd potential addition for Stockport. His grounding in non-league, combined with the pedigree of his youth development, means he would arrive hungry to prove himself at a higher level. With Peterborough previously turned away, any deal will require a significant fee, but the investment could pay off quickly given the midfielder’s trajectory.
Fylde will not want to lose one of their brightest prospects, yet the EFL stage now beckons. For the Hatters, this could be the kind of calculated gamble that fuels another push towards the top end of League One.
