Birmingham City Boss Issues Jay Stansfield Injury Update

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has admitted the club are nervously waiting the extent of an injury to star striker Jay Stansfield.

The 22-year-old has once again played a key role for the Blues during the early stages of this season having helped the club get out of League One at the first time of asking. There were many who had question marks as to whether he could replicate his form in the Championship, but he has started the campaign excellently.

Leading the line, the former Fulham youngster has bagged three goals in five appearances in all competitions, including what looked to be the winner against Ipswich Town on the opening day before George Hirst’s late equaliser.

He was given a rest from the start for last night’s Carabao Cup second round clash with Port Vale but was introduced as a substitute at the beginning of the second period after the Valiants took a shock lead on the stroke of half time. He was unable to break down his opponents’ back line though and he left the pitch in pain at full time following a late clash with defender Liam Gordon.

Davies Unsure Of Severity Of Stansfield Injury

News emerged earlier today that Stansfield was on crutches and in a protective boot at Birmingham’s training ground this afternoon. With the Blues set to travel to Leicester City on Friday night, Davies remained positive over the fitness of the England under-21 international, although was unable to offer a significant update. Speaking to the media, he said:

“Jay had a little bit of a knock towards the end of the game and was limping. He’s being assessed by the medical department today so I haven’t got the full extent of what exactly that is. We can’t add any more detail to it but he did take a knock.”

Chris Davies will be eagerly awaiting the news of any scans and hoping that Stansfield hasn’t suffered anything serious. Although Birmingham have many options in the attacking end of the pitch, the 22-year-old is arguably their prized asset and one that will be needed on Friday against one of the favourites to challenge for promotion. It’s going to be a nervy 48 hours for the supporters.
