Blackburn Rovers In Talks With Top Flight Side Over £5 Million Deal

Blackburn Rovers are in negotiations to land Lorient forward Sambou Soumano in a transfer that could exceed £5 million.

The 24-year-old striker, who played a key role in helping Lorient win promotion back to Ligue 1 last season, is being monitored closely by the Ewood Park club. Sources suggest talks are ongoing with a view to structuring a deal that fits within Blackburn’s financial constraints.

Blackburn’s Ambitious Move

Alan Nixon reported that Rovers have been in contact with Lorient over Soumano, who scored 14 goals in Ligue 2 last season and has already opened his account in the French top flight. Blackburn manager Valerien Ismael is desperate to bolster his attack after his side struggled for goals last term, with no player reaching double figures in the Championship.

The Lancashire club’s recruitment strategy has taken a more continental turn in recent months, with the arrivals of Ryan Alebiosu, Moussa Baradji, Dion De Neve, Axel Henriksson, Ryoya Morishita and Sidnei Tavares from overseas. Soumano, with his proven scoring record, is seen as an ideal addition to lead the line.

Striker’s Record and Interest

Soumano first broke into Lorient’s squad in 2021/22, scoring three goals in Ligue 1. His reputation grew significantly during a loan spell with Quevilly, where he netted 15 times, before returning to Lorient and hitting 14 goals in their successful promotion campaign. Blackburn scouts were reportedly impressed when he struck in a 4-0 win over Rennes earlier this season.

While Soumano is said to be open to a move to England, Lorient’s valuation of £5m or more presents a hurdle. Blackburn are expected to table a compromise bid, potentially involving bonuses and a sizeable promotion-related clause to meet Lorient’s demands.

Writer’s View

This would be a bold deal for Blackburn Rovers. Spending £5m on a single player would mark a significant shift from recent transfer windows under the Venky’s, but the need for a reliable goalscorer is clear. Soumano’s track record suggests he could be the answer, yet there is always risk in translating Ligue 2 form to the Championship.

If Rovers can secure him on a structured deal that minimises financial exposure, it could prove to be one of the most decisive signings of the summer. Without a proven striker, a push for the play-offs looks unlikely — with Soumano, that picture could change.
