Coventry City Closing In On £10 Million Transfer Boost

Coventry City are locked in advanced negotiations with Wolfsburg over the sale of right-back Milan van Ewijk in a deal that could exceed £10 million.

The Dutch defender, who has been one of the Sky Blues’ standout performers early this season, is reported to have agreed a four-year contract with the Bundesliga side.

Wolfsburg Close to Sealing Deal

Respected European transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri has claimed discussions between the two clubs are at an advanced stage, with final details being negotiated. His report suggests the deal is valued at €10m with an additional €2m in bonuses, equivalent to just over £10m.

Van Ewijk only arrived at the Coventry Building Society Arena in 2023 for £3.4m from Heerenveen, meaning the Sky Blues stand to make a significant profit if the transfer goes through. While Wolverhampton Wanderers and Turkish giants Besiktas had also been linked, Wolfsburg now appear to be leading the chase.

The 23-year-old has started the Championship season in excellent form, registering three assists in his last two appearances as Frank Lampard’s side racked up 12 goals in back-to-back league matches. Despite speculation over his future, Lampard has continued to select him as first-choice right-back in each of City’s opening fixtures.

Implications for Lampard’s Squad

The potential departure comes just weeks after Coventry secured Kaine Kesler-Hayden from Aston Villa, a move that now looks like it may have been made in anticipation of Van Ewijk’s exit. The 21-year-old has Championship experience from spells at Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle, and would be expected to step straight into the starting line-up.

However, Lampard would be left light on cover. Joel Latibeaudiere, who can operate at right-back, is primarily a centre-half and is currently sidelined with a knee injury. That leaves the manager needing reinforcements if City are to remain competitive on multiple fronts this season. With the transfer window closing at 7pm on 1 September, there is little margin for error in the final days of business.

Any sale would also underline the challenge facing Lampard as he seeks to balance ambition with financial reality. While the fee would represent an impressive return on investment, it removes one of the club’s most dynamic outlets at a time when consistency is key.

Writer’s View

If Wolfsburg complete this deal, Coventry’s recruitment strategy will come under immediate scrutiny. Selling Van Ewijk at such a profit would be excellent business, yet the timing risks unsettling a side that has started the season brightly.

Much will depend on whether Kesler-Hayden can step up quickly and if additional defensive depth is secured before the deadline. Lampard’s ability to navigate these final days of the window may prove decisive in shaping the Sky Blues’ campaign.
