Plymouth Argyle Confirm International Defender Departure

Plymouth Argyle have confirmed that Iceland international Victor Palsson has left the club by mutual consent.

The 34-year-old midfielder departs Home Park little more than a year after joining from Belgian side Eupen, having featured 31 times for the Pilgrims.

Palsson’s Farewell

Palsson, who has earned 50 caps for Iceland, issued a heartfelt statement upon his departure, thanking both the club and supporters for their backing during his short stint in Devon.

“I’m really grateful for my time at Plymouth Argyle and to those who gave me the chance to play in English football again,” he said via the club website. “It was short, and didn’t go how I, or anyone, had hoped, but I’m thankful for the opportunity. I wish the club, the players, the staff and everyone involved with Argyle nothing but the best moving forward. And to the Green Army: we’re all just humans doing our best. Your support means more than you know.”

The midfielder began his professional career in England with Liverpool, having progressed through the club’s academy, but never made a senior appearance before moving to Hibernian in Scotland. Since then, he has enjoyed a nomadic career that has taken him to the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Belgium, as well as a loan stint at Dagenham & Redbridge early in his career.

Palsson’s spell with Plymouth saw him initially recruited for Championship football under the recommendation of former manager Wayne Rooney, though injuries and inconsistency limited his impact. Following relegation to League One and Rooney’s subsequent exit at the turn of the year, his future at Home Park was increasingly uncertain.

A Career Across Continents

Across a career spanning 13 clubs, Palsson’s honours include winning the Swiss Cup with FC Zürich in 2018 and helping Schalke 04 claim promotion back to the Bundesliga in 2022. He has also represented his country at every age group before becoming a regular part of the senior national team setup, scoring three goals in his 50 appearances for Iceland.

His time in England comes to a close with 28 league appearances for Argyle, and although his tenure in Devon may not have matched expectations, his extensive experience and versatility ensure he remains a well-travelled and respected figure in the game.

Writer’s View

Palsson’s exit underlines the ongoing rebuild at Home Park as Argyle adjust to life back in League One. While the Icelandic midfielder brought pedigree and international experience, his impact on the pitch was limited, and the mutual consent departure feels like a natural parting of ways.

For Argyle, the focus now shifts to reshaping the midfield with younger, more durable options who can shoulder the demands of a promotion push. For Palsson, his career has already shown a remarkable willingness to embrace new challenges across the globe, and it would be no surprise to see him surface in another competitive league before long.
