Sheffield Wednesday Close In On 30-Year-Old Stopper

Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on the loan signing of Cardiff City goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, with only registration formalities standing in the way of the deal being confirmed.

The Owls have been granted special dispensation to bring in a first-team keeper following an injury to number one Pierce Charles.

Horvath Deal Nears Completion

Head coach Henrik Pedersen confirmed the club had been working urgently to secure a replacement, with USA international Horvath now expected to join until January. Despite operating under financial restrictions and a recruitment freeze, the EFL have approved an exception in light of the club’s shortage in goal.

Talks with Cardiff and the 30-year-old stopper have been finalised, and sources suggest no late obstacles are anticipated. Should registration be completed by midday Friday, Horvath could make his debut in Saturday’s Championship clash against Wrexham.

Pedersen told reporters:

“We’re working, and I’ve worked the last couple of days to find a solution if it can happen. So I hope that we have a solution very soon… It’s a difficult situation in the loan market now, and to find the profile who has the things we’re searching for, but we’re working hard to find one who can fit us right now and help us in the near future. I’m convinced we can find an OK solution.”

Proven Pedigree

Colorado-born Horvath has won 10 senior caps for the United States and arrives with extensive experience across Europe and the EFL. His early career included spells with Molde in Norway and Club Brugge in Belgium, where he featured in the Champions League and kept clean sheets against Monaco, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid.

Since moving to England, Horvath has accumulated 83 Championship appearances and was part of back-to-back play-off successes, first with Nottingham Forest in 2022 and then on loan with Luton Town a year later.

At Cardiff, however, he has slipped down the pecking order, prompting the move to Hillsborough where he will be expected to provide stability during a difficult run of injuries.

Writer’s View

This move represents a vital short-term fix for Sheffield Wednesday at a time when defensive stability is crucial. Horvath brings top-level experience, composure and a track record of delivering in high-pressure moments, which should immediately strengthen the side.

Pedersen has been pragmatic in targeting a player who can both fill an urgent need and adapt quickly, and while the deal is initially only until January, it could prove pivotal in steadying the Owls through the opening months of the season. If Horvath settles swiftly, his presence between the posts may be the difference between an anxious campaign and one with more secure foundations.
